Dunes, forest and heathland in one walk? You’ll find it all in Duinenpark Molenheide.
In this surprising natural gem in Houthalen-Helchteren, you stroll through a landscape that is constantly in motion. Thanks to a major nature restoration project, the park has been completely transformed. Dense woodland has given way to open spaces full of plants, rolling dunes and stretches of heathland. The result is a dynamic and varied landscape, perfect for exploring.
Whether you’re here to walk, play or simply breathe in the fresh air, every path leads to something new. One moment you're under a canopy of trees, the next you're crossing a sandy dune or gazing out across the open heath. And if you're lucky, you might even spot a deer, a bird of prey or a rare insect along the way.
Looking for a short yet diverse walk? Try the 2.6 km blue loop, which showcases the park’s natural variety. Want to go further? Set out via the De Wijers walking network and follow nodes 58, 59 and 60 for a longer discovery route.
At the heart of the park, Ter Duinen Helchteren is the perfect place for a break. In this former forest café, you can enjoy a drink or an ice cream while the children burn off some energy in the adventure playground. The wild boars behind the fence are always a popular attraction. Ter Duinen is open on weekends and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00, and also on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during school holidays.
The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are kept on a leash.
For families with children, there’s even more to discover. With a special discovery map, young adventurers can set off on a quest through the park. Solve all the questions, and you’ll be rewarded with a fun surprise. The map is available at Ter Duinen or Visit Houthalen-Helchteren.
