Leopoldsburg, in northern Limburg, is best known for its barracks and extensive army grounds. Put on your walking shoes or jump on your bike and discover how disarmingly hospitable Leopoldsburg is.
Things to do in Leopoldsburg
Did you know that Leopoldsburg was an important strategic point in WWII? From here, the Allies launched Market Garden, one of the most daring operations of the war. At Beverlo Camp, tens of thousands of German soldiers practised while thousands of prisoners of war were held. Liberation Garden plunges you into the turmoil of battle: go into hiding during a real-life bombardment and fly a Spitfire straight into the heart of Germany. In between, there is room for human stories: step into the shoes of resistance fighters, occupiers and liberators.
The Leopold I walk also departs from Liberation Garden. This 5.5 km route takes you past 29 sites with military and civilian heritage throughout the municipality.
Dive into Gerheserheide nature reserve for a walk along quiet dirt roads, past dunes covered with pine forests. Gerheserheide is home to the mysterious nightjar: from recreation area De Merel, follow the Nachtzwaluwpad and you might come across it.
