Genk is a vibrant city bathed in greenery. The mining past is omnipresent here. This city is the ideal destination for a city break combined with a trip into nature.
Did you know that you can explore the Hoge Kempen National Park from Genk? Less than 5 kilometres from the city centre, you can walk or pedal through the Kattevennen gate into the vast countryside. The 5.6 km forest walk is highly recommended.
Kattevennen has even more up its sleeve. Scour the universe in the Cosmodrome, play a game of mini-golf and climb the Lightning Staircase. Horse riders and horsemen take a pleasant ride in the woods on the bridle paths.
When in Genk, a visit to Bokrijk cannot be missed. At the Open Air Museum, you will discover where our customs and traditions come from. Old crafts come to life and you can roll up your sleeves yourself during fascinating workshops.
From Bokrijk you can easily walk or cycle into the mighty beautiful pond landscape of De Wijers. It is here that you will find the unique cycling experience of 'Cycling through Water' in Bokrijk.
The mining heritage is clearly visible in Genk. The garden quarters, terrils, shafts and mine buildings each tell a unique story. At C-mine, the expedition first takes you underground before letting you climb to the top of the shaft trestle. In the courtyard, you wander through the Labyrinth.
The former Zwartberg mining site has been transformed into the artistic site of artist Koen Vanmechelen. Labiomista tells the story of heritage, contemporary art and biocultural diversity.
