Take a forest hike in Kattevennen, gateway to the Hoge Kempen National Park. Your hike starts at the Observatory. The first part follows the Planet Path, where you walk along all the planets of our solar system built to scale. The information panels explain more about what is floating around out there in space.
Set off across the 800-metre boardwalk and dive deeper into the coniferous forest. And the forest forms the backdrop for the rest of your hike. The conifers served as support beams for the coal mines. The Regionaal Landschap Hoge Kempen is gradually transforming the forest into a more natural forest with a greater diversity of flora and fauna.
This is the ideal location for a nice relaxing hike. Moreover, Kattevennen is very popular with horse riders, so you will regularly encounter some natural obstacles for horses along the way.
With the end point already in sight, it is worth taking a moment to follow the path to the picnic site/artwork Corpus. Still got some mileage left in those legs? Climb the Bliksemtrap for magnificent views of the Hoge Kempen National Park and Genk.
Nature along the way is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests and Limburgs Landschap.
