Sint-Heribertuskerk Remersdaal

The landscape in the eastern part of the Voer region shows all the characteristics of the ”Land van Herve”: scattered farmhouses, meadows, hawthorn hedges and fruit orchards.
Apart from the neogothic St Heribertus church from 1897 some remnants and the farm belonging to the castle ”Het Hoes” may be seen. The much better preserved castle of Obsinnich, from the 17th century, is to be found some kilometres away from the village centre next to the railway line. It is now in use as a Youth Hostel.
When passing the borough boundary on the way to Sippenaken – where the splendid castle of Beusdaal may be admired – a curious monument is passed. It was raised in the memory of the victims of the electrical wire which separated Belgium and the Netherlands in World War I (the Great War)

Treasury of Saint-Catherine's Church

SS Harlindis and Relindis lived in idyllic Aldeneik, where their father Adelhard founded a convent for them in the 8th century. Valuable art treasures from this period, such as Anglo-Saxon textiles (the oldest surviving examples ot their kind) and Codex Eyckensis (the oldest illuminated manuscript in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg), were donated to this convent. In 1571 these precious objects were transferred to St Catherina's Church, where they are on show to visitors along with many other treasures: a silver altar cross by Maaseik-born Frederik Malders (17th century), several early medieval reliquaries...
The Flemish authorities added six objects from the treasure chamber of Saint Catharina church in the centre of Maaseik to the List of Masterpieces in July 2019. These include a 14-century Agnus Dei (wax medallion), a 16th-century ciborium (a container to hold the host) and a silver procession cross made by the Maaseik silversmith Frederik Malder (1593-1662).Objects on the List of Masterpieces enjoy extra protection due to their special cultural-historical and scientific significance.

NAC (New Administration Center)

In Houthalen-Helchteren the past goes hand in hand with the future. As symbols of two major periods, they stand out over our community: the pit heads and the New Administrative Centre (NAC), which has even made it onto the list of ‘100 places in the world that you just have to see’.

This futuristic and at the same time sober, ecological and extremely functional building is located on the old mining site and houses among others the municipal services, the OCMW (Social Service Department), the library, VVV-Toerisme and the police. The observation point on the roof of the building's blue tower, an artistic spot with an extensive view over this community and the region, is called ‘het Oog van Daubechies’ ('the eye of Daubechies').

This tower is named after a resident of Houthalen-Helchteren: Ingrid Daubechies. In the stairway enclosure you will find more information on her brilliant and famed mathematical formulas.

Sint-Pietersbanden Church

Sint-Pietersbanden Church transports any visitor to the heavens. Just a glance at this protected monument instantly reveals the different centuries in which the church was built: the neo-Gothic nave fits in nicely with the late-Gothic church tower. You can enjoy the carillon concerts here every Wednesday afternoon.

The church tower was built around 1480 as a proud testimony to a prosperous town. But the thanks goes to the sheep, because it was the annual proceeds from the local wool trade that financed the church tower, soon earning it the nickname the ‘wool tower’. In total it is 40 meters tall, with a 17 meters tall spire and has 57 marlstone masks. The church building is a little younger, from around 1900-1903, and is known for the interior decoration by Vincent Lenertz: the monumental organ, the stained glass windows by Gust Ladon and restored murals by Adolphe Tassin depicting the life of Peter, the saints and the angels.

The village is dominated by the tall ( 23 metres) railway bridge. It is part of the rail connection Tongeren-Aken, built by the Germans in the Great War (World War I). This highlevel overpass links the railway line to the longest rail tunnel of Flanders (2070 metres). The steeple of the St-Martinus church dates back to the 13th century. Reverend Veltmans (1866- 1954) is buried to the left of the church tower. He played an important role in saving the Dutch character of the Voer region. Among the old tombstones on the churchyard there is one from the 16h century. It can be found just behind the graves of an RAF aircraft crew, (their plane crashed in 1944).A little further along the road the Veltmanshuis may be found, named after reverend Veltmans, a former chapterhouse from the first half of the 18th century. Until 1971 it served as the presbytery. Now it is the Cultural Centre of the Flemish Community.
The two central Voer villages of St-Martens and St Pietersvoeren have a concentration of flintstone buildings unequalled anywhere in Flanders. Especially the hamlet of Veurs has a great many old timber frame farmhouses, so characteristic of this region. Most of these dwellings date back to the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century.
