Steentje is a fictional character who guides you on an adventure through Thor Park.
Steenmannetjes, meaning cairns or literally “little stone men”, have long been used for navigation in the Western world. At Thor Park, the Steenmannetjes show you the quickest way to the top of the slag heap. Now, you can also enjoy the route with an interactive app. Using the ErfgoedApp heritage application, you’ll discover the stories of Steentje, a fictional character who takes you on an adventure through the wonderful world of Steenmannetjes. Steentje knows all about local heritage and nature. During the trail, you’ll discover various animals that live in the National Park. Keep your eyes open and you may spot a Eurasian skylark, a natterjack toad or a smooth snake, and learn more about them! By the way, are you a good detective? Then you’ll also find Steentje himself along the way! This trail is a fun experience for all ages, and you’ll be rewarded with a breath-taking view over Hoge Kempen National Park at the end.

With the little ones you follow the green Beestig Bomenpad, where Norbert de eik teaches you all about De Wijers and Kelchterhoef. Or jump and clamber on the Multimove trail. The entire park invites you to lie down, enjoy or play. There is so much to experience that you should definitely come back.

Wandelen in Kattevennen - wandelen Kattevennen

Hiking Kattenvennen

Signposted routes take you to quiet places of enjoyment in the pine forest of Kattevennen. From the parking lot of the domain you can start your hike to the Marien cave of Wiemesmeer or to the Heempark.
The green route is 4.6, the blue 7.2 and the red 9.6 km. A new yellow loop of 11.5 km connects Kattevennen with the Hei- en meibos of Sledderlo and the surfing lake Papendaalheide.

The Kattevennen walking map is available in the visitors' centre.

If you want to fill your lungs with fresh air, this is the place for you!
The gateways are the ideal starting places from where you can explore the National Park and all it has to offer!

In the Mechelse Heide, nature speaks for itself: beautiful heathland as far as the eye can see! Or would you rather climb the mining-stone hills in Terhills to enjoy a breath-taking panorama? Relive the noble past in the moated castle in Pietersheim or visit the children's farm with playground. In Kattevennen, you can sit back and let yourself be carried away by the 360° projections in the Cosmodrome, while a barefoot trip in Lieteberg will never leave you disappointed! If you’re bringing bikes, then Station As is your ideal starting point. The National Park expanded in 2020 and in the future Thorpark (Genk), Duinengordel (Commanderij Gruitrode, Oudsbergen) and Bergerven ('t Eilandje, Maaseik) will be developed as gateways.

The National Park with its dark green forests, vast heathland and shimmering fens invites you to go out on a hike. You can choose from 82 signposted loops, which start at the gateways. They are easy to combine thanks to the hiking switches. Did you know that two walks in Pietersheim carry a Premium quality label?

We’re confident that cyclists and mountain bikers, too, will find what they are looking for here! Thanks to the network of cycling tracks, you can easily create your own route. Mountain bikers have the choice of 10 signposted loops, ranging from 16 to 80 km, all varying in difficulty.

We even have a whole network of trails for horse riders. With clear signs and clear maps, you will never lose your way!

Would you like to strike out with a local? Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, a Ranger sets off from one of the gateways. Groups can also book their own Rangers online.

Enjoy this lovely greenspot and castle on walking distance of the Market Place. The walking tour ‘Hidden beauties’ guides you through the Regional Landscape Haspengouw and Voeren. The beautiful rose garden is being maintained by the gardeners of ‘Tuinhier Volkstuinen’ and Wiric. Children can visit the new inhabitants (alpaca’s, goats, pigs, rabbits, mule’s, pony’s…) and enjoy themselves on the playground, surrounded by nature and threes. You can sit down and grab a bite or have a drink in Afspanning ‘t Speelhof.

De Groote Heide cross-border nature reserve

De Groote Heide cross-border nature reserve covers an area of no less than 6,000 hectares that stretches from the green south side of Eindhoven to far across the border with Belgium in Pelt and Hamont-Achel. You can, for example, stroll along the babbling water of the Dommel, stand eye to eye with the cattle in De Plateaux-Hageven or chill out on the terrace of the Achelse Kluis with a refreshing Achelse Trappist beer.

De Groote Heide embodies the very best the outdoors has to offer. Made up of lots of smaller nature reserves, each with its own value, charm and potential. They are connected by an excellent cycling and hiking route network. Admire the beautiful rural and agricultural countryside in between and all around. And don't forget the water! Dozens of fens are scattered throughout the area. From the south, a wide range of streams and brooks end in the Dommel.

The various nature gateways form the ideal start to your visit to the Cross-border Nature Reserve and have something for everyone!
