A hide allows you to spot birds without disturbing any of the animals.

Out and about with a Ranger

Together with the Rangers of the Hoge Kempen National Park, you can discover the Hoge Kempen National Park in a relaxed, sometimes active, but always surprising way. Most activities are walks, but you can also book a Ranger by bike or horse. There are adapted activities for people with disabilities.

You decide the date, starting time and location. Keep in mind that reservations must be made 3 weeks in advance!

Couldn't get a whole group together? No worries. Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, a ranger is waiting at one of the entrance gates of the National Park. Reservations are not necessary, you only pay a small participation fee.

De Groote Heide cross-border nature reserve

De Groote Heide cross-border nature reserve covers an area of no less than 6,000 hectares that stretches from the green south side of Eindhoven to far across the border with Belgium in Pelt and Hamont-Achel. You can, for example, stroll along the babbling water of the Dommel, stand eye to eye with the cattle in De Plateaux-Hageven or chill out on the terrace of the Achelse Kluis with a refreshing Achelse Trappist beer.

De Groote Heide embodies the very best the outdoors has to offer. Made up of lots of smaller nature reserves, each with its own value, charm and potential. They are connected by an excellent cycling and hiking route network. Admire the beautiful rural and agricultural countryside in between and all around. And don't forget the water! Dozens of fens are scattered throughout the area. From the south, a wide range of streams and brooks end in the Dommel.

The various nature gateways form the ideal start to your visit to the Cross-border Nature Reserve and have something for everyone!

The Heiderbos, part of hiking area Thorpark, is a beautiful piece of nature. This small but extremely valuable 41-hectare nature reserve is the only location in Flanders where you can still find a large population of juniper bushes. To preserve, protect and strengthen this rare species, the juniper was adopted by As in 2006.

The Valley of the Zwarte Beek offers you a varied landscape for walking: vast plains, sunken roads or beautiful views, there is more than 100 km of looped hiking fun!

Historical walk 'Asch airfield'

Near the former colony are several bunkers and concrete slabs of the old airfield as silent witnesses of Asser's war past. With the help of the Erfgoedapp, you can take a walk there that connects these different historical elements.
Two versions were developed, one aimed specifically at adults and the other version was developed i.c.w. the Memory Collective for families with children. The walk is 2.5 km long and starts at boarding point De Kolonie (vzw Arbeidskansen).

Negenoord Nature Reserve

"Negenoord-Kerkeweerd nature reserve (Dilsen-Stokkem) was once a gravel extraction site. Today, it is one of the many nature reserves being created along both the Belgian and Dutch sides of the Grensmaas. At the same time, a large cross-border 'Meuse Valley River Park' spanning over 2,500 hectares is being created, gravel is being extracted and more space is being provided for the river. This limits the risk of flooding.

In harmony with nature
The Negenoord-Kerkeweerd nature reserve is managed all year round using Konik ponies and Galloway cattle. They create a mosaic structure with open spaces, flower-rich brushwood and bushes. Recently, the beaver was also introduced to help out. Because of their grazing pattern and the supply of lime-rich gravel and seeds from the south, you find flowers and plants in Negenoord-Kerkeweerd that you will hardly find anywhere else in Limburg (except in the areas of the Meuse).
This floral paradise in turn benefits a great many butterflies and bees, such as the rare Andrena hattorfiana bee and the Queen of Spain fritillary.

This unique hiking area recently acquired an observation tower.
The tower was built in the middle of the area, on a mound at the highest point. The loam tower occupies a spot in the centre of the hiking area and offers visitors a wonderful view of the Meuse Valley River Park. Only natural materials such as clay, sand and Meuse gravel were used, all in the right proportions.

Roving adventurers
Because Negenoord-Kerkeweerd is so vast, you can roam around the ‘struin’ zone (area where visitors are allowed to roam freely). There are no paths, but you can follow those made by the Konik ponies or Galloway cattle and pretend you are in the middle of nowhere.
To guarantee the large grazers and other wildlife in the area are not disturbed, we do ask that you do not take dogs into the ’struin’ zone. Dogs are welcome on the footpaths in other parts of the hiking area."

The C-mine discovery map outlines a 4-kilometre walk through this charming green residential area in the vicinity of the colliery.

The discovery map is available from the C-mine Visitor Centre during opening hours.

In the signposted Vliermaalroot hiking area you can choose from three routes that can be combined with each other, varying in distance between 5 and 15 km.
You can start at the information panel at the church of Vliermaalroot. You can also leave your car there.

The walking area is mainly located in and around the valley of the Mombeek and runs along castles, forests, grasslands and poplars.

Did you know that our first king was not the first to rule Belgium?
Shortly before him, a regent was appointed, who ruled the country until a king was selected and appointed.
And that was ... baron Erasme Louis Surlet de Chokier.

At that time he was not only the first regent of Belgium, but also the mayor of Gingelom and so there are many places here linked to this important historical person.
The Chokier Trail (3,8 km) guides you in the footsteps of baron Surlet de Chokier.

You pass the castle of Gingelom, where Belgium's first head of state lived, as well as the Kamerijkhoeve, where he raised his merino sheep. During asparagus season, you can feast on Regalys green asparagus here. Finish with Chokier beer, an amber-colored full malt beer with a light-colored foam.

Bosland Sahara Observation Tower - Giant of Bosland

"Anyone who wants to view Bosland from the air can now do so from the brand new observation tower. There are 144 steps to the top, 30 metres above ground, which is a bit higher than 15 doors stacked on top of each other!

The ropes draped around the tower reflect the contours of the Saharan dunes. If you were to lay all the sections of rope in a row, it would be as long as 30 football pitches (about 3.5 km). On the way up, between the ropes, you can enjoy the view, which stretches further and further as you climb.

On a clear day, the panorama extends to 25 km (that's almost 210 football pitches!)! Want to zoom in on that amazing view? Well, you can because there is an observation viewer at the top.

Practical info

- Every hiking route in the Sahara landscape area passes by the observation tower. For a quick visit take the blue route, it is then about 2.5 km from the starting point.

An aqueduct – an artificial earth embankment with a wooden water basin – was built to supply the city centre. Nowadays, the remains of this aqueduct are known as Beukenberg, a stunningly beautiful walking area close to the city centre. Beukenberg is acknowledged as a protected archaeological monument..... the largest in Belgium!

The green route is 4.6, the blue 7.2 and the red 9.6 km. A new yellow loop of 11.5 km connects Kattevennen with the Hei- en meibos of Sledderlo and the surfing lake Papendaalheide.
