As a rather temperamental, rain-fed river, the Maas has had a major impact on the landscape of the Maas Valley. Thanks to the river, we also have the cultural city of Maaseik and the picturesque village of Aldeneik.

At Heerenlaak, you first stroll around the lake before entering the charming Maas village of Aldeneik. You will have noticed the vines at the start of the hike, but we keep the passage to the Aldeneyck Wine Estate as a reward at the end.

Maaseik is traditionally known for Maasland herbs. You can visit Belgium's oldest pharmacy on the market square. Along Labaerdijk there is a picking meadow where you can pick herbs for your own use. The perfect chance to create your own tea?

Overlooking the Maas, you continue walking towards the pilgrimage site of Heppeneert. Besides the statue of Mary that washed up here centuries ago and is still devoutly worshipped, you will find one of the best preserved examples of floodplains in Heppeneert. These are plots of land between the river and the winter dyke that are allowed to flood at high tide.

Past fields and meadows, it heads towards the historic centre of Maaseik. The city from which the artist brothers Van Eyck took their name. They are still there to greet you on the market square, the ideal stop by the way to take a break on a terrace under the lime trees.

The promised passage to the Aldeneyck wine estate follows in the last few kilometres. Every Friday and Saturday, you can come and enjoy a few tasting glasses on the wine terrace or in the cosy wine lounge.
