Treasury of Saint Catherine

The Treasury of Saint Catherine, a hidden gem in the heart of the Maasland, is reopening its doors after a well-deserved renewal.

Just a short walk from the Pharmacy and Regional Archaeological Museum – in the crypt of the Saint Catherine Church – you’ll discover a hidden gem. The Treasury of Saint Catherine houses an impressive collection of textile and embroidery art dating back to the 8th century, rare early medieval relics, and masterful silverwork by Flemish artists – including many recognized Flemish Masterpieces.

This exceptional collection now shines in a new setting that does it justice. The outdated interior has made way for a modern, atmospheric, and welcoming museum concept that better highlights both the historical significance and aesthetic beauty of the objects.

But the renewal goes beyond appearance. Clear information panels and contemporary multimedia applications guide visitors through the fascinating stories behind the church treasures. Historians and experts bring the context of the objects to life – in an accessible way, suitable for both young and old.

Visitor experience is also central to the renewed museum. Interactive tools such as a sensory table, an educational puzzle, and tablets for exploring objects in detail make the visit not only informative, but also personal and immersive. The Flemish Masterpieces, which were sometimes overlooked in the past, now receive the space and attention they truly deserve. With this reopening, the Maaseik Museums aim not only to preserve heritage but to activate it. A museum visit becomes a sensory experience where seeing, listening, and touching come together in a dynamic and surprising whole.

The Treasury of Saint Catherine will reopen to the public on 14 September 2025. Come and discover the centuries-old story of these church treasures – in a whole new light.
