Join us for a hike to admire both Herkenrode's greenery and history. Herkenrode Abbey was once the richest women's abbey in the Low Countries. Visit the Experience Centre to see and experience the site’s history in full. The hiking route starts as soon as you walk through the gatehouse.

You slalom through the historic buildings towards Engels Park, which you cross on a delightful winding path. The old fish ponds, Zonderikbeek and the river Demer serve as the water element.

The Agency for Nature and Forests has worked hard to restore the landscape. The various standard orchards offer dozens of old apple and pear varieties a new home. Sheep and cattle make their contribution in managing the grasslands.

In the birdwatching hut, you can see herons, storks and quite possibly a bittern. On the bend that leads you back in the direction of the Abbey, you pass the Tuiltermolen, first mentioned in 1083.
