The vast expanse of sand makes the Sahara look like a miniature desert. With an oasis, a clear blue lake in the centre, surrounded by coniferous and deciduous forests. The hike starts with an approach route from De Soeverein and covers a total of 4.2 km.

The Sahara is a sub-area of Bosland National Park, the largest contiguous forest in Flanders, managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests.

At the start of the loop, you immediately pass the play forest where children can have fun on the many play elements made of willow branches by environmental artist Will Beckers. Climb the 30-metre-high observation tower to enjoy the best views. On clear days, you can see Genk's slag heaps. Dogs are allowed to be off the lead in the four-hectare dog-walking zone. It connects to the blue hiking route.
