RECREATION DOMAIN ’T FONTEINTJE - VISITOR CENTRE DE WATERSNIP

Many people know the recreation domain ‘het Kapelleke’, as it developed around the chapel of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-aan-de-staak, which has been a place of pilgrimage ever since 1826.

The focus in this forest area lies on the lookout tower. From the tower you can admire the typical Kempen countryside. You’ll find trick pin courses, a playground, mini golf and a paddling pond.

Lommel’s largest playground is located in a quiet wooded area. There are many fun games such as a cable car, a giant swing, various play and climbing apparatus and a separate area for toddlers.

Take off your shoes and socks and walk almost 3 km on a controlled surface of wood, stones, tree chips, grass, loam and water.
Every step stimulates your feet and senses. Walk through ponds, climb sandy hills and steep slopes and find your way through a labyrinth.
An 18-metre-high wooden watchtower gives you a beautiful view of the surroundings. At the most beautiful and quiet places, there are swinging benches. There is also an adventurous rope bridge that spans the main entrance to the visitor centre.
Take a walk on the Dragonfly, a 100-metre spectacular crown path that leads to a 10-metre-high leaning tower above the pond. Feel like a dragonfly searching for insects and float between the treetops, descend the tower between the bushes to above the water surface of the pond, leave the tower via a peculiar footbridge back into the forest. Afterwards, you can enjoy a drink and a piece of Limburg pie in the cafeteria or on the terrace.

The Belgian International Tattoo, Michael Flatley, international sports teams and many others have already trod the boards of the multifunctional arena!

Tip: Optisport Sports Centre, with its new swimming pool and tennis hall, is definitely worth a visit. You can have a drink or a bite to eat in brasserie De Kantine.

Klankenbos - Sound art in the open air

Klankenbos (Sound Forest) is a permanent collection of sound installations in open air. The setting is unique in Europe and meant for a broad range of visitors, encouraged to learn more about sound art and to discover sound as well as silence.

Klankenbos is always open and free of charge for individuals and groups. In Klankenbos guided tours are possible as well. Musica also organizes various activities, for individuals, families, groups and schools, in and around the forest.

! Please note: from 21 December 2020 till 21 March 2021 Klankenbos will go into hibernation.

This means that the forest will remain open for walks, but some sound art works may not work during this period.
Infopoint Radio Forest will remain open daily from 8:00-18:00. There are no guided tours or other public activities during this period. Installations will be fully operational again at the start of spring. Bookings for guided tours from 22 March 2021 onwards remain possible.

For a full experience, we would like to invite you to visit in the new season, starting from 22 March 2021.

Minitrein - Minitrein

The 1,300 m long narrow-gauge railway takes you in a miniature train through the beautiful nature of the Three Banks forest. On the way you pass the 31 m high watchtower of the Hoge Kempen National Park.

Between the months of April and September you can come and take a ride with the miniature train on Sundays. There are 3 rides each time at 2 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm. Due to the Corona measures there are only 2 rides at 2 pm and 3.30 pm.
Tickets must be paid for on the spot at the stop of the mini-train, watchtower Station As. Reservations can be made via toerisme@as.be

ATTENTION: In case of bad weather conditions the ride can be cancelled.

Family game 'Where's Cyriel the cricket?'

Armed with an expedition belt and booklet, you and your whole family go on a quest to learn who Cyriel is and what he is up to in the mine of Winterslag. Unravel the mystery and who knows, maybe you’ll receive a medal as a souvenir of this special tour!

The game can be played during the opening hours of C-mine expedition, at your own pace. It lasts on average 1.5 hours and is suitable for children six years and older. The expedition booklet contains extra craft pages to get started with at home.The game is played in the C-mine expedition and is suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years. (Only in Dutch and French).

‘Scavanger hunt’ for kids between 5 and 12 years old

From egg to caterpillar, from caterpillar to chrysalis, from chrysalis to butterfly: on this walk children learn about the different stages of a butterfly’s development while playing. The fairytale-like play and experience elements by artist Will Beckers that you encounter along the way are accompanied by educational explanations and tasks for children.

From egg to caterpillar… and from cocoon to butterfly… A butterfly only mates once in its life and can lay 200 to 300 eggs. Some butterfly species drop their eggs as they fly. And those are the eggs that you come across as stepping stones on your way through the woods. You will also find a jumbo and playable caterpillar, the butterfly’s miraculous growth process in the cocoon and a real butterfly takes children on its flight.
