Maasmechelen

Maasmechelen is one of the five Maas municipalities and part of RivierPark Maasvallei and National Park Hoge Kempen. Gravel ponds, heathland landscapes, wild river nature, mine rails and shaft bucks define the landscape. The old mine site was transformed into an experience hub full of shopping, nature and entertainment.

Things to do in Maasmechelen

Thanks to years of mining, the flat Maasland became richer in a few hills: in Eisden, several mound tops adorn the horizon. The two pithead towers are also silent witnesses of this mining past. Atop the long slag heap, you admire one of the most photographed panoramas, with views of gravel lakes and wild nature all around. This phenomenal piece of Hoge Kempen National Park is Terhills. Must-do: cross the water via the pontoon bridge 'Cycling between the Mijnterrils ' and enjoy 360° views over the water.

Right next to Access Gate Terhills you will find Maasmechelen Village, good for seven days out of seven shopping pleasure. Over a hundred boutiques with national and international luxury brands offer steep discounts all year round. Come and score your new outfit and end your day with a culinary highlight in one of the cosy restaurants.

The Mechelse Heide hiking area is also located in Hoge Kempen National Park. From mid-August to mid-September, the purple heather is in full bloom, a spectacle not to be missed. Traverse this pristine landscape via 'Cycling through the Heath', a 4-km stretch between cycle junctions 550 and 551. The iconic wooden bridge takes you to expansive views of the landscape along the way.

The Meuse is the backbone of RiverPark Maasvallei. The Maas dykes thread together unspoilt nature and charming villages. The cosy village of Leut with its castle domain Vilain XIIII is the ideal base for your walking or cycling trip. Expect stately avenues, hedges, orchards, old Meuse meanders and wild new nature.
