This remarkable bridge is located in Belgian Limburg. You can cycle or walk across the large Terhills lake between the two mining terrils. Along the way, enjoy a phenomenal 360° panoramic view.

Where to find ‘Cycling between Terrils’?

The floating bridge of ‘Cycling between Terrils’ is located in Hoge Kempen National Park, in the eastern part of the province.

To give you an idea:

  • ‘Cycling between Terrils’ is less than 30 km from Maastricht (NL).
  • It’s just an hour by car from Liège, Leuven and Aachen (DE).
  • And about an hour and a half or less from Brussels, Eindhoven (NL), Antwerp, Cologne (DE) and Düsseldorf (DE).

The bridge connects cycling junctions 502 and 565 on the Limburg cycling network. You can easily plan your bike ride with our route planner or follow one of the routes we’ve already mapped out for you.

Can you also walk across the bridge?

Absolutely, you can also cross the water on foot. However, keep in mind that the current hiking routes in the area have not yet been adjusted.

Coming by car?

Parking near ‘Cycling between Terrils’ is available at Terhills Cablepark Parking, Nationaal Parklaan 1, Dilsen-Stokkem (view on the map). From here, the bike path is a 900-meter walk or ride.

Additionally, the other gates of Hoge Kempen National Park serve as ideal starting points for those arriving by car. Besides parking, you’ll typically find tourist information, restaurants and bike rentals. So, leave your car at one of these places and cycle towards nodes 502 - 565.

The nearest access gates with ample parking:

  • Terhills in Maasmechelen – between junctions 502 and 60
  • Station As – at junction 41
  • Lieteberg in Zutendaal – between junctions 64 and 251
  • Thor Park in Genk – between junctions 508 and 809
  • Mechelse Heide in Maasmechelen – at junction 60

Coming by public transport?

Genk is the nearest train station. From there, cycle 22 km to ‘Cycling between Terrils’ via junctions 250 - 30 - 535 - 565 - 502. You can also take bus line 44 toward Maasmechelen Village. Check current timetables on De Lijn’s website.

From the Netherlands, Maastricht is the nearest train station. Via junctions 79 - 2 - 1 - 10 - 559 - 58 - 57 - 56 - 55 - 502 - 565, it’s about a 24 km bike ride to ‘Cycling between Terrils’.

Renting a bike? Of course!

If you’re not bringing your own bike, you can always rent one. This can be done nearby at the National Park Visitor Center.
