Teseum: archaeological site
Through the generations, the people of Tongeren built a town to live and work in. The walls and foundations of that town are still standing. They can be admired on the archaeological site of the Teseum, one of the most inspiring sites in the Benelux countries. Here you will be able to see with your own eyes that Tongeren was the first town in Belgium. Three metres below ground, age-old stones tell the story of the town, its inhabitants and the church. That story started 2000 years ago with the Roman rulers, and is still being written today. This site is the unmissable starting point for any visit of Tongeren.

The museum is located in the historical setting of the unique Romanesque tower and chapter house of Our Lady’s Basilica. In addition to a presentation of the historical church treasury, topics such as liturgy, saints, relics, and the chapter house are also included. Reading between the Lines
Reading between the Lines, the chapel/art installation of the Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh consists of 100 steel sheets stacked on top of each other in the shape of a church. The construction weighs a whopping 30 tons. The special way of construction makes the landscape always visible throughout the church, from far away and up-close. The church is therefore present but also absent in the landscape. According to British newspaper, The Guardian, this is the most beautiful place in Belgium.
