From the garden suburb of Winterslag, you walk towards the mine just as the miners did in the past. You can still feel the life of the miners’ families in the stately buildings around the square of the Sacred Heart Church, as well as the life of the current residents of the mining region in the always lively Vennestraat. The mining sites C-mine (Winterslag) and Greenville (Houthalen) are excellent examples on this route of how industrial heritage has been revived with great respect for the past, while looking towards the future.

The nature reserves De Teut and Ten Haagdoorn are part of De Wijers and form the largest heathland area in Midden-Limburg. Between the two mining sites, this area provides a delightful natural interlude. The unique variety of flora and fauna is a major asset of this region. On to Stage 5.
