Discover the natural splendour of De Maten in De Wijers along the 4 km orange route. This wetland area, managed by Natuurpunt and the free-grazing Galloway cattle, offers an authentic De Wijer landscape experience with its beautiful ponds and heathland.
De Maten, which is mentioned in the earliest writings dating back to 1437, is home to one of the oldest nature reserves in Belgium. Over the centuries, the landscape has inspired artists and photographers alike, and today it is a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers. You set off from the historical setting of the famous Slagmolen, which still works and where the first fulling mill was built in 1523 by the Hasselt cloth-making trade.
During the hike you are treated to great views of the ponds and will be surprised by the diversity of the landscape. Take time to spot some birds with your binoculars and discover the rich bird population that breeds here. That is why dogs are not allowed on this route.
Whether you are an amateur birder or not, immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere of De Maten and explore the amazing nature and heritage this area has to offer.
