Zandloperpad

The paved track from the car park leads to the ‘Zandloperpad’ (Sandpiper Path). This 1.5K wheelchair track through the former sand quarry shows off the National Park’s different biotopes. A pocket-sized national park, if you will. A bird hide, a wooden deck and a few physical challenges make it even more fun.

The path is paved so wheelchair users and young families with prams can also enjoy the beautiful landscape.

“The Big 5” are found in Africa. They are the five most powerful mammals in the world: the lion, the elephant, the buffalo, the rhinoceros and the leopard, and if you are very lucky, you can spot all five of them on a safari in an African nature park.

Africa is quite far away, so fortunately Belgium has several nature parks! You may not believe it, but you can spot many cool animals on a safari through our Hoge Kempen National Park - without even venturing too far into the park. A wide variety of wildlife lives concealed around the Zandloperpad (Sandpiper Path), provided you know where to look of course!

Biologist and film-maker Frank Resseler is the ideal guide on your safari through the National Park. He reveals the wonderful world of wildlife that lies hidden between the banks of the river Maas, in the dry sand, or amongst the heather. The most fascinating animals live there, right under your nose, and Frank will tell you all about them.

Follow the Zandloperpad in an anti-clockwise direction, and find the QR codes on the wooden poles. Scan all 4 of them using a smartphone or tablet, and find out everything about the Big 4 of our kids safari. Who knows, maybe a lion (cub) is peering out from under a tree?

National Park Kidsafari is an initiative of the Municipality of Maasmechelen, in collaboration with the Hoge Kempen National Park.

Domain ‘t Speelhof

Enjoy this lovely greenspot and castle on walking distance of the Market Place. The walking tour ‘Hidden beauties’ guides you through the Regional Landscape Haspengouw and Voeren. The beautiful rose garden is being maintained by the gardeners of ‘Tuinhier Volkstuinen’ and Wiric. Children can visit the new inhabitants (alpaca’s, goats, pigs, rabbits, mule’s, pony’s…) and enjoy themselves on the playground, surrounded by nature and threes. You can sit down and grab a bite or have a drink in Afspanning ‘t Speelhof.

De Groote Heide cross-border nature reserve

De Groote Heide cross-border nature reserve covers an area of no less than 6,000 hectares that stretches from the green south side of Eindhoven to far across the border with Belgium in Pelt and Hamont-Achel. You can, for example, stroll along the babbling water of the Dommel, stand eye to eye with the cattle in De Plateaux-Hageven or chill out on the terrace of the Achelse Kluis with a refreshing Achelse Trappist beer.

De Groote Heide embodies the very best the outdoors has to offer. Made up of lots of smaller nature reserves, each with its own value, charm and potential. They are connected by an excellent cycling and hiking route network. Admire the beautiful rural and agricultural countryside in between and all around. And don't forget the water! Dozens of fens are scattered throughout the area. From the south, a wide range of streams and brooks end in the Dommel.

The various nature gateways form the ideal start to your visit to the Cross-border Nature Reserve and have something for everyone!

Negenoord Nature Reserve

"Negenoord-Kerkeweerd nature reserve (Dilsen-Stokkem) was once a gravel extraction site. Today, it is one of the many nature reserves being created along both the Belgian and Dutch sides of the Grensmaas. At the same time, a large cross-border 'Meuse Valley River Park' spanning over 2,500 hectares is being created, gravel is being extracted and more space is being provided for the river. This limits the risk of flooding.

In harmony with nature
The Negenoord-Kerkeweerd nature reserve is managed all year round using Konik ponies and Galloway cattle. They create a mosaic structure with open spaces, flower-rich brushwood and bushes. Recently, the beaver was also introduced to help out. Because of their grazing pattern and the supply of lime-rich gravel and seeds from the south, you find flowers and plants in Negenoord-Kerkeweerd that you will hardly find anywhere else in Limburg (except in the areas of the Meuse).
This floral paradise in turn benefits a great many butterflies and bees, such as the rare Andrena hattorfiana bee and the Queen of Spain fritillary.

This unique hiking area recently acquired an observation tower.
The tower was built in the middle of the area, on a mound at the highest point. The loam tower occupies a spot in the centre of the hiking area and offers visitors a wonderful view of the Meuse Valley River Park. Only natural materials such as clay, sand and Meuse gravel were used, all in the right proportions.

Roving adventurers
Because Negenoord-Kerkeweerd is so vast, you can roam around the ‘struin’ zone (area where visitors are allowed to roam freely). There are no paths, but you can follow those made by the Konik ponies or Galloway cattle and pretend you are in the middle of nowhere.
To guarantee the large grazers and other wildlife in the area are not disturbed, we do ask that you do not take dogs into the ’struin’ zone. Dogs are welcome on the footpaths in other parts of the hiking area."

Donkey experiences

At Kisserhoeve, we offer a variety of different donkey experiences in Kempen~Broek. Kempen~Broek is a veritable patchwork of different landscapes, where marshes feature alongside brook valleys, fens, woods, heath, meadows, pastures, fields and large-scale agricultural areas. In short, something for everyone, with water as the recurring theme.

Our experiences:

- Donkey walk
You’ll get to lead our easy-going donkeys on a walk. Once you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by our team, and given a 15-minute introductory session going over health and safety, and to pair you up with the perfect donkey for you! Then, it’s time to set off! You’ll walk alongside your donkey and lead them around rural roads and nature.
You'll receive a backpack with a snack for you and the donkeys!
You can choose two distances, 5 km and 6,5 km.

Happiness... is making memories together!

- Kisserweide experience (only in spring-summer)
For a few hours you will have our grassland: 'Kisserweide' with the donkeys. You can freely use the accommodation. Taking care of the donkeys, taking a walk. Playing with games from "the wooden cabin", relaxing in the sitting area with picnic table. You can choose whatever you want to do, there is no timetable for activities. Picnic is allowed. Hiking trails to use with the donkeys are available.

Standing on the highest look-outs, information is given about the impressive landscape, heritage, local manufacturers and tourist attractions. Panorama signs and spectacles are used.

- Abbey tower
The viewpoint on the abbey tower, which is the beacon of the city, is the only viewpoint that is located in the center. From here you get a beautiful view of the city and the haspengouw nature that embraces the city. At bike junction 135.
- Viersprong Nieuwenhoven
On the Viersprong, located between Engelbamp and Heide, there is a lookout point that overlooks the southern Sint-Truiden, whose skyline is clearly recognizable on clear days. At bike junction 150.
- Honsberg Zepperen
From the higher Honsberg or Hongarenberg (Hungarians settled here) you can view the village with binoculars: with the Sint-Genovava church, the meadows of d’Oye and on the horizon the tower of the basilica of Kortenbos. A breathtaking view over the typical Haspengouw nature. Between bike junction 171 and 149.
- Panorama basin Romeinse Weg
On the Romeinse Weg in Velm, you will come across a water basin in the middle of the Haspengouw fields. Go up the stairs to the platform and discover a 360° panoramic view of the area. Between bike junction 185 and 186.
- Helsh(ea)ven
At the highest point in Helshoven, you can now enjoy a breathtaking view of the Haspengouw landscape. Artist Frits Jeuris designed a unique creation made of dozens of felled fruit trees from the area. The latest platform offers a little more. It is embedded in “Helsh(ea)ven”, a work of art made of 90 cherry trees of fifty years old. At the end of 2016, they fell prey to the Little Cherry Virus, an infectious plant disease that causes too small fruit in cherries. Now the felled trees get a second life. The work symbolizes the dynamic landscape of Haspengouw. At bike junction 169.

This breathtaking natural landscape makes the extra effort well worth it. The legend route connects perfectly with the cycle route network and the walks of RivierPark Maasvallei and is an ideal walk for families.

The little donkeys of B&B De Romeinse Katzei are eager to go out with you.

We mapped out 2 loop walks :

- The walking loop ' Reading between the Lines ' is a 7,5 km loop walk with start and finish at B&B De Romeinse Katzei. Along the way we stop at Landmark Roman Villa for a snack and a drink. Highlight of the walk ( besides walking with the donkeys themselves ! ) is the see-through church, Reading between the Lines .

- The walking route 'Looking for Hellsheaven ' is also 7,5 km and starts and ends at B&B De Romeinse Katzei. Along the way we stop at the Tjenneboom for refreshments.

Before going on a walk with Nelleke, Olina or one of the other donkeys , there will be an extensive cuddling moment and they will be prepared by you for the walk.

Out and about with a Ranger

Together with the Rangers of the Hoge Kempen National Park, you can discover the Hoge Kempen National Park in a relaxed, sometimes active, but always surprising way. Most activities are walks, but you can also book a Ranger by bike or horse. There are adapted activities for people with disabilities.

You decide the date, starting time and location. Keep in mind that reservations must be made 3 weeks in advance!

Couldn't get a whole group together? No worries. Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, a ranger is waiting at one of the entrance gates of the National Park. You only need to register online, and show up on site on time.

For lovers of beer and walks, there are several trappist routes though the green land of Achel and the urban area of Hamont, including one that is wheelchair accessible. Of course,the route leads you past many excellent places to sample a local pint.

Rozenroute - rozenpark Geistingen

Rose Trail

From June to September, Geistingen is ablaze with the most beautiful colours of roses, with no fewer than 2,000 roses adorning Mariapark that time of year. A total of 6,000 roses can be admired in this beautiful Meuse village. Come and experience this period with us. The rose route is 6 km long and takes you, among others, along the ornamental garden and rose garden of the Pepels family and Luc Van Esser’s ADR Rosarium Geistinger Landhoff. During this period, both gardens can be visited on Wednesdays by individual visitors free of charge.
The price of the hiking map is €3.00. You will be offered a ‘dröpke’ (a ‘drop’ of alcohol) and an ice cream along the way.

The Eggertingen nature reserve is located in the south of Kortessem and ends in Hoeselt and Borgloon. On foot you will discover the (bio)diversity of 3 streams and their valleys. Along the slopes you will get to know surprising views of old landscape elements such as beautiful wooded edges, standard orchards and flower-rich meadows.

In the Uilenbos there are, in addition to the wood anemone, the spotted arum, the celandine weed can also admire the ground elder and the wasp orchid.

You can explore the Eggertingen nature reserve via 2 routes, each between 5 and 10 km.

The Valley of the Zwarte Beek offers you a varied landscape for walking: vast plains, sunken roads or beautiful views, there is more than 100 km of looped hiking fun!

Explore the impressive Herkenrode Abbey site. Surrounded by a beautiful landscape of ponds, orchards, fields and canals, the stately abbey site emerges before you. As in the past, sheep and cattle help manage the moist grasslands. The area is rightfully the gateway to De Wijers. The routes vary between 1 and 9 km and allow you to experience De Wijers in all its facets.

Get to know the Vinkenbier route. This 10 km walking route will teach you more about the origins and history of the Vinkenbier. The route takes you past beautiful spots in Geistingen, Ophoven and Kessenich, some of which were important for the creation of the Vinkenbier.

The route is signposted, but is also made clear via directions on the walking map.
Taking this route with an E-car is definitely recommended!

Stadswandeling Bree - gids

City Walk Bree

Bree has three city halls! The oldest one is located on the Market and is now the home base for tourism and information. The building contains a remarkable rococo pediment in which the coat of arms of Bree is incorporated. The second city hall is located on the City Square and currently houses the Peace Court and the services of the Ministry of Finance. This city hall has a unique balcony, from which King Boudewijn, Queen Fabiola, Prince Filip, Princess Mathilde, but also Kim Clijsters, have greeted the gathered crowd. The current city hall, located on the Free Square, was a former monastery and school. The building is 17th century and a real gem. Both the outside with the beautiful Renaissance garden, and the inside are worth a visit. This and much more can be found during your city walk in Bree. The route plan is free to pick up at Tourism Bree. There is also the possibility to do a city walk with a guide, which can be reserved through Tourism Bree.

With more than 10,000 ha of forest and heathland, it is a lovely place to be during a walk or cycle trip.
