Four inhabitants of Voeren welcome the visitor in their dialect. This immediately rouses the interest to get to know this “strange” region.
Next a panoramic view and a movie reveal a number of other secrets.
Through sliding panels you learn more about geology, the subsoil and the landscape. Interesting facts regarding fauna and flora are discovered in a playful way. By way of puzzles, buttons, tunnels, sounds and lights you get acquainted with a number of “special hosts” such as the badger, the escargot, the trout, the nurse-frog, the fire salamander, etc. “Southern and chalk loving plants” such as the mistletoe, wild marjoram, orchids, honeysuckle, red elderberry also love the region of Voeren ….
But not only nature is a main attraction point as the region also has a number of other worthwhile sights of interest such as the villages with their monumental and historic buildings and timbered houses: certainly worth a visit.
Beautiful pictures and pieces of craftsmanship will certainly rouse your interest. And the cow with a tower of milk will amaze every “townsman or woman”.

At junction 91 on the cycle route network you cycle through the water. You don’t need to wear wellies or a wetsuit, because, as luck would have it, you stay on dry land. But the cycle path takes you through the pond from one bank to the other. And at one point you cycle with the surface of the water at eye level on both sides. That's fun!

Buy the thematic Cycle Network Map, ride along the 7 signposted cycle routes and let Hesbaye’s fascinating history unfold before your eyes.
One of these routes leaves from and arrives in Bilzen. You will cycle past the imposing Grand Commandery Alden Biesen, moated Schoonbeek Castle and Groenendaal Castle.

Burgemeesterspark

Burgemeesterspark (Mayor’s Park) is a green lung in the middle of town. Close to the Burgemeestershuis and Sint-Pietersbanden Church. This atmospheric city park with monumental trees and artful park residents, is Lommel’s chill out and picnic spot par excellence when the sun in shining.

Art and music are never far away in Burgemeesterspark. Designed by landscape architect Paul Deroose and it is inhabited by ‘De Buitenmens’. A statue by Henk Visch whose crazy posture captures the attention at once.

Tip: Burgemeesterspark is also the ideal spot to listen to the carillon concerts on Wednesday afternoons.

Nature area 'Alserbos'

This area comprises 65 ha and has an elevation difference from north to south of 160 m. to 240 m. above sea level. On the steep, western slope you can find an oak-birch forest with a variation of oak, lime, ash, bilberry and beech. The Alserbos is one of the rare places in the Voer-region where heather, gorse, pennyroyal and woody chamois feel particularly at home. Even the badger feels at home here and has an ideal living and foraging area. Part of the nature reserve has been opened up as a "play forest". Starting point: Bauwerd, 3792 Sint-Pieters-Voeren

This is one of the most beautiful and important natural areas of the Voer-region. The exceptional fauna and flora of this area consists of ancient standard orchards, forest edges, slopes and grafts. It is an important foraging area for the badger. The hawk, red kite, little owl and tawny owl also feel in their element here. Intensive grazing management should give the limestone flora full chances to bloom again, including the orchids.

The spoil tips in Genk are real beacons in the landscape. Do you know how they came about? These ‘mountains’ consist entirely of piles of waste rock removed from the different layers of the coal veins. If you see a spoil tip, there used to be a mine in the vicinity! These ‘waste mountains’ unexpectedly created their own microclimate, enabling you to discover a wide range of unique plants and animals over there today. The spoil tip was declared a protected landscape in 1999. You can climb to the very top. Don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes.

Thor is a very special urban park, noted for (among other things) its various cycle trails, footpaths and picnic spots. It’s a relaxing environment for employees on the site, but also for those living round about and for visitors who want to experience the area’s natural beauty.

'Cycling through the Trees' in Bosland

In Pijnven you can cycle through the trees. Cycling through a forest environment is a special experience for the senses. This cycle path safely takes you into higher realms. Quite literally - because you cycle around a double circle up to a height of 10 metres between the trees. You can see, feel and smell nature’s splendour.

You can find this cycling experience in Hechtel-Eksel, at Pijnven in the Bosland forest, at junction 272 of the cycle route network.

It is no coincidence that 'Cycling through the Trees' (#FDDB) is located in Bosland. The largest uninterrupted forest area in Flanders unites man and nature. Each of the four municipalities in Bosland has its own theme. For Hechtel-Eksel, this is “The tree in...” Cycling through the Trees (#FDDB) now gives Hechtel-Eksel its own landmark.

Just like 'Cycling through Water', this cycle path offers a unique cycling experience in harmony with the natural environment. By unlocking the fabulous Bosland with such spectacular results, visitors can experience this natural world in a very special way. You become one with the forest.

The path gradually rises to a height of 10 metres and is 700 metres long with a diameter of 100 metres. The Corten steel pillars are situated at varying intervals of 1, 2 and 3 metres apart and symbolise the straight trunks of the fir trees, ensuring that the structure fits beautifully into the environment.
