The National Park with its dark green forests, vast heathland and shimmering fens invites you to go out on a hike. You can choose from 51 signposted loops, which start at the six gateways. They are easy to combine thanks to the hiking switches. Did you know that two walks in Pietersheim carry a Premium quality label? If you’ve still got some energy left, then why don’t you have a go at the long-distance hike of 75 km?

We’re confident that cyclists and mountain bikers, too, will find what they are looking for here! Thanks to the network of cycling tracks, you can easily create your own route. Mountain bikers have the choice of 10 signposted loops, ranging from 16 to 80 km, all varying in difficulty.

We even have a whole network of trails for horse riders. With clear signs and clear maps, you will never lose your way!

Would you like to strike out with a local? Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, a Ranger sets off from one of the gateways. Groups can also book their own Rangers online.

By the way, did you know that the Hoge Kempen National Park and the surrounding mining sites are candidates for recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

None of the Gateways to the National Park are so adapted to hiking as the ‘Mechelse Heide’. The north side of the road between ‘As’ and ‘Maasmechelen’ (‘J. Smeetslaan’) will take you through a nice forest area, while the south side mainly consists of heather and will take you to some of the highest points of the ‘Hoge Kempen’. You can even see as far as Germany. Due to the difference in height, some of the routes are considered moderate to heavy walking. But it is well worth the effort, since these hikes will take you to some of the most beautiful patches of heather in the region (‘Mechelse Heide’ or ‘Kikbeekbron’). All the hiking routes fall within the boundaries of the National Park

The hiking booklet leads you along the floodplain of the river Maas in Uikhoven. You can reach large dikes and roads of abandoned fields. It gives the wonderful flora and fauna, with typical valleys of the Meuse. You you face a beautiful and picturesque village of centres. But most importantly, you should enjoy a piece rich in folklore, typical of the Maasmechelse Church Kotem and Uikhoven villages. Five legends are essential in the brochure. You can find them on the panels of information along the route. It is also worth to make a small loop or the trail 7 km walk to work.

The hiking routes of ‘Station As’ will show you the typical landscape of the ‘Hoge Kempen’. The vast heather fields of yore have been replaces by pine forests and farm land. Still, there are some beautiful areas that will give you an idea of the former heather, like ‘Bosheide’, or ‘Driebanken’. The ‘Dilserbos’ and the ‘Lanklaarderbos’ will challenge your courage with some sturdy slopes of the ‘Kempens Plateau’.

The history of Limburg as a mining area has left its traces in the landscape. Old forests, country roads and homesteads will paint you a picture of the past. As an added bonus, 2 hiking routes take you through the enchanting landscape of the valley of the ‘Bosbeek’, an area with soft sloping hills, humid swamps and clear water of the ‘Bosbeek’.

Your guides are the well-known walking posts of te region. Start out from the church in Aldeneik or at the entrande of the Heerenlaak region. On the back of the map (€2.50) you will numerous fun facts about the region.

Walking in Thor Park

The 30-hectare Thor Park is part of the magnificent Hoge Kempen National Park. You can explore the park either on foot, or by bike using the Limburg bicycle network. The Schansbroek (stream), the Klaverberg (inland dunes) and the Kolenspoor (coal railway) are all nearby. The remarkable landscape is a combination of rare flora and fauna, magnificent industrial mine buildings and the garden suburbs. Hence the application for their classification as UNESCO world heritage.
Thor Park’s old Waterschei spoil heap, made up of waste rock adjacent to the coal seams removed during coal mining, is a nod to Genk’s rich mining history. In 1999 the spoil tip was given listed status, but you can still climb it. Just follow the little stone men to the top. You can contribute your own little stone man. At the top of the tip, you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the impressive colliery and the KRC Genk football stadium.
To make the Thor Park area accessible to the public, eleven new walks ranging from 2 to 16 km have been mapped out. They are outlined in the handy THOR PARK map of walks, a total of more than 40 km of signposted footpaths. Information about the area is also provided. The map is available from F&B outlets at Thor Central, the main building on the site next to the C-mine Visitor Centre, or online via the National Park webshop.

The hiking routes starting at ‘Kattevennen’ are the ideal connection between the centre of Genk and the National Park. The vast pine forests are an excellent environment for an intensive walk. Due to the presence of the Botanical Park, the sundials of the ‘Molenvijver’ park and the Path of the Planets, it is also an educational trip.

Examples of possible trips are: following a “wooden plank path”, hiking to the ‘ecoveloduct’ (an ecoduct for both fauna and cyclists), and many more.
