The land of beer, milk and honey

The two routes pass through the tremendous nature of our community. The red route is 14 km long, the yellow route or family route is 8 km long. The walks are accessible to everyone and take you on tranquil country roads (mostly surfaced) past woods, pastures and brooks to a number of tasteful spots in our community where you can literally sample what Houthalen-Helchteren has to offer.

The Abeek Valley

This valley is one of the loveliest river valleys in Flanders, with a fantastically diverse and rare ecosystem on its river banks. Everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of this valley by taking a walk along the network of loops in the towns of Peer, Meeuwen-Gruitrode and Bocholt.

Ten Haagdoorn

This unique nature area of 800 ha with moorland, woods, inland dunes, ponds and moors is located alongside the Laambeek and on the Kempen plateau

In the reserve you can get a dose of healthy energy for hours in an unspoilt nature area. Perhaps along the way you will come across the flock of sheep: it supports nature management in the area.

A map with marked walking paths is available from VVV-Toerisme Houthalen-Helchteren.

The reserve can be accessed throughout the year from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Admission is free. Naturally you may not walk outside of the paths.

Your dog is welcome too, but only on a lead so as not to chase the flock of sheep, not to disturb the wild animals and not to hinder other visitors.

With the exception of the ‘Vierlandsherenpunt’, all hiking routes starting at the ‘Lieteberg’ fall outside the National Park. This does not mean they are not very charming natural areas on themselves. They are situated on the soft slanting southern hillside of the ‘Hoge Kempen’. Most heather has given way to pine forests, but you can still find some very nice relics of heather at the ‘Bezoensberg’. And the ‘Hesselberg’ contains the second biggest plantation of juniper. More to the south, the regions ‘Hoefaert’, ‘Roelen’ and ‘Gellik’ have a lot to offer. In ‘Hoefaert’ and ‘Roelen’ you will find some very diversified woodlands, whilst ‘Gellik’ is situated near the border with ‘Haspengouw’, which explains the amount of orchards around the villages.

All of this is possible under the guidance of a Ranger of the ‘Hoge Kempen’ National Park. They will welcome you to the only National Park in Flanders. In small groups, the Rangers of the ‘Hoge Kempen’ National Park will take you on a relaxing or active, but always surprising discovery of the ‘Hoge Kempen’. They want to show recreationists, nature lovers, schools, companies and youngsters a pleasant time in nature by teaching them how to enjoy nature in a playful yet durable manner and by informing them on the possibilities of natural recreation.

Stimulus Path

Stimulus Path

Experience nature along the route that was created for children and young people with a disability. The Stimulus Path starts at the Flemish Visitors Centre ‘De Watersnip’. Along the walking route you will pass 12 "experience elements". They include touch boxes, a sound labyrinth, a wiglo, a visual wall, touching stones, etc. Visitors are stimulated with scents, sounds (or silence), colours, structures, movements, etc. The five senses play a central role in the development of children.

The Stimulus Path is fun for everyone, especially for families with young children. Part of the path runs through the playground at the Koersels Kapelleke.

You can borrow a guide book from the visitors centre during the opening hours of 'De Watersnip'. You can also explore the Stimulus Path with a nature guide. The path is about 2.5 km long and can easily be done with an all-terrain buggy.

Guided walk through the nature reserve het Gan and a visit to the water production centre branch of the Water group. Accompanied by a guide, specially trained for this area, visits the walkers the sunken village, caused by the mine subsidence. My prolapse everywhere for in my area, but E-Village is the only location in the county where the impact of the mine subsidence are clearly visible. After a trip through the canopies of the trees, one sinks off in nature reserve het Gan where there by the mine subsidence different water sources have come to the surface. The Water group processes this spring water from a drinkable product. The process of source to drinking water is visited in the buildings of the Water group.

This walk guides you to the most interesting places and monuments of the little town on the Demer. Follow the raised copper markers in the pavement engraved with the B of Bilzen and walk along lovely green spaces and fascinating historic sites.
