After being built in Olmen in 1797, the 26 tonne Leyssensmolen went on to be relocated no less than three times! Its sails now soar in Kattenbos, where you can relax on the lawn or the picnic benches around it. Keen to discover more of the mill’s secrets? Look no further! During the open days, passionate millers will show you how the mill works and tell you more about its history.

Sint-Pietersbanden Church

Sint-Pietersbanden Church transports any visitor to the heavens. Just a glance at this protected monument instantly reveals the different centuries in which the church was built: the neo-Gothic nave fits in nicely with the late-Gothic church tower. You can enjoy the carillon concerts here every Wednesday afternoon.

The church tower was built around 1480 as a proud testimony to a prosperous town. But the thanks goes to the sheep, because it was the annual proceeds from the local wool trade that financed the church tower, soon earning it the nickname the ‘wool tower’. In total it is 40 meters tall, with a 17 meters tall spire and has 57 marlstone masks. The church building is a little younger, from around 1900-1903, and is known for the interior decoration by Vincent Lenertz: the monumental organ, the stained glass windows by Gust Ladon and restored murals by Adolphe Tassin depicting the life of Peter, the saints and the angels.

NAC (New Administration Center)

In Houthalen-Helchteren the past goes hand in hand with the future. As symbols of two major periods, they stand out over our community: the pit heads and the New Administrative Centre (NAC), which has even made it onto the list of ‘100 places in the world that you just have to see’.

This futuristic and at the same time sober, ecological and extremely functional building is located on the old mining site and houses among others the municipal services, the OCMW (Social Service Department), the library, VVV-Toerisme and the police. The observation point on the roof of the building's blue tower, an artistic spot with an extensive view over this community and the region, is called ‘het Oog van Daubechies’ ('the eye of Daubechies').

This tower is named after a resident of Houthalen-Helchteren: Ingrid Daubechies. In the stairway enclosure you will find more information on her brilliant and famed mathematical formulas.

The Ukrainian Catholic community purchased an empty lodge called ‘Terminus’ belonging to Waterschei coalmine and turned it into the Josyf Slipyj centre to a design by E. Lambrechts. The space for the congregation and the altar space are separated by an iconostasis painted by Sister Elisabeth of the ‘Vita et Pax’ priory in Schoten in 1960. The Byzantine-style stained-glass windows were made by Armand van Rompaey between 1990 and 1992.

Sint-Pieterskerk, Teuven

Teuven is situated in a lovely undulating landscape, surrounded by extensive forests. The neogothic St Pieters church from 1870 towers high above the rest of the village.
Teuven has two castles. Firstly, ‘De Hoof‘, formerly the dwelling place of the local lords
The Flemish community purchased it in 1985 and it was re-decorated and re-furbished privately afterwards. It is now exploited as a hotel and restaurant.
Secondly, the former abbey of Sinnich which has been in private possession since the French Revolution. From around 1250 the Augustinian nuns lived here in an abbey which was founded from Kloosterrade (Rolduc) – now Dutch Limburg.Only daughters of noble descent were admitted to the community of Sinnich. The stone Roman steeple from the 13th century is the only remaining landmark that goes back to these starting years.
The tower and the frontispiece, designed by the Aken architect Couven (1750) may just be spotted from the road. However, just like the other castles of Voeren, this castle is also not open to the public.

Museumchurch ´Oud Rekem`

The main building on the Groenplaats is the baroque Sint-Pieterskerk. In 1704, Count Ferdinand d’Aspremont-Lynden of Reckheim signed an agreement with the Bishop of Liège, stating that he was allowed to demolish the parish church on the castle estate, provided that he would build a new one elsewhere.

A number of farms on the Groenplaats were expropriated to free up space for the construction of a new church. Work commenced that same year. However, the count did not keep his promise. As soon as the choir and part of the nave were ready, he stopped the works due to lack of money. The actual reason was an old feud between the clergy and the count family.

The church remained unfinished until 1722, the year in which pastor Maghin was appointed pastor van Rekem. The latter was very pleased that Countess Antonia, a sister of Count Ferdinand, was prepared to intervene financially, so that the construction work could be resumed. Unfortunately, the church was not spared from disaster afterwards. In 1755 a fire broke out in the small town of Reckheim and together with 21 houses the church partially burned down. After the difficult start of 1704, the church now remained as a ruin until it was put back into use in 1774.

Because the church became too small years later due to the increasing number of parishioners from Rekem and Visé, a larger church was built in 1956 in the Kleinveld. After being the center of Rekem's parochial life for two centuries, the old parish church was taken over by the city council in the same year to be converted into a museum.

Under the motto "church becomes church again", the interior was restored to its original form and after a thorough restoration in 2015, it can now be admired in all its glory.

The aim of the farming "nostalgia" is to go back in time and get acquainted with the hard, everyone back but also beautiful peasant life of the past. Even ordinary life was in the museum portrayed. Who knows how to separate the wheat from the chaff, how they milked cows or tractors which there is reason in the field? Some things that Ivo Smeets has found are recognizable but forget others, even of the 19th century.
