Teseum: treasury and cloister garden

Tongeren is one of the most ancient religious sites in the Low Countries with a major church treasure of the Basilica of Our Lady. It comprises numerous valuable pieces of religious art such as reliquaries, reliquary pouches, gold and silverwork, medieval choir books, and rare textiles.

The museum is located in the historical setting of the unique Romanesque tower and chapter house of Our Lady’s Basilica. In addition to a presentation of the historical church treasury, topics such as liturgy, saints, relics, and the chapter house are also included. With a walk-through “music box,” visitors may view and even listen to centuries-old scores. The museum story ends with the coronation festivities, the link to today and the current tradition.

And there’s more! You’re invited to an exclusive tour of the adjacent Romanesque cloister and lovely monastic garden, one of the city centre’s hidden treasures.

You will make a tour with a multimedia guide (iPod), a digital tool brimming with stories that will enthral young and old, as well as providing the information sought by real history enthusiasts. The multimedia guide is available in 4 languages.

Sint-Pieterskerk, Teuven

Teuven is situated in a lovely undulating landscape, surrounded by extensive forests. The neogothic St Pieters church from 1870 towers high above the rest of the village.
Teuven has two castles. Firstly, ‘De Hoof‘, formerly the dwelling place of the local lords
The Flemish community purchased it in 1985 and it was re-decorated and re-furbished privately afterwards. It is now exploited as a hotel and restaurant.
Secondly, the former abbey of Sinnich which has been in private possession since the French Revolution. From around 1250 the Augustinian nuns lived here in an abbey which was founded from Kloosterrade (Rolduc) – now Dutch Limburg.Only daughters of noble descent were admitted to the community of Sinnich. The stone Roman steeple from the 13th century is the only remaining landmark that goes back to these starting years.
The tower and the frontispiece, designed by the Aken architect Couven (1750) may just be spotted from the road. However, just like the other castles of Voeren, this castle is also not open to the public.

Time travel at the John Selbach Museum

The John Selbach Museum is made up of two sections.
Painting and furniture collection
The John Selbach Museum is located in the former Ursuline Cloister on Boomgaardstraat in the centre of Maaseik. The first section holds the extensive collection of paintings from the 16th to the 19th century, depicting interiors, townscapes, still lives, landscapes, seascapes, animals and portraits.
In many ways then wandering through the museum, visitors take a cultural trip through the museum, visitors take a cultural trip through time. That impression is strengthened by the period rooms from the Renaissance to Biedermeier. The interiors and the zeitgeist are preserved there, too, as visitors are invited tot take a trip back in time.

Dolls and toys
As well as this imposing collection of paintings and furniture, the former cloister also houses hostess Corinne's Doll Museum.
The Doll Museum used to be in Maastricht. Some dolls are made from wood, but there are als dolls made from papier mâché, wax, fabric and biscuit porcelain. Mirroring the paintings set-up, the rooms housing the dolls are furnished in contemporary styles. There are 17th and 18th century period rooms, kitchens and fashion salons. The dolls are exhibited alongside accessories, such as miniature furniture, dinner services, tin toys, teddy bears, trains and other knick-knacks.

Beeldentuin Staf Timmers

In addition to being a painter and sculptor, Staf Timmers is also a passionate gardener who has made his garden into a work of art.

There you will walk from one surprise to another, full of idyllic corners, with first a park with tall trees, to then be immersed in a maze of art and nature. It is not just a sculpture park, but a garden in which every sculpture has its own place. Art and nature form an expressive and organic whole there.

You can also walk into his workshop and see how an idea grows from a design in putty to a monumental bronze work of art, and how a simple sketch inspires the creation of a fully expressive painting.

In 1964 the Turkish miners came together on the Paul Lambert Avenue in a wooden building. Now here is a nice building with minaret. This is a tower from which the imam calls the faithful to prayer. At the back of the mosque you see a bulge. This is the niche where the imam stands for leading the prayers. This nis is facing towards the East, in the direction of Mecca.

Sint-Heribertuskerk Remersdaal

The landscape in the eastern part of the Voer region shows all the characteristics of the ”Land van Herve”: scattered farmhouses, meadows, hawthorn hedges and fruit orchards.
Apart from the neogothic St Heribertus church from 1897 some remnants and the farm belonging to the castle ”Het Hoes” may be seen. The much better preserved castle of Obsinnich, from the 17th century, is to be found some kilometres away from the village centre next to the railway line. It is now in use as a Youth Hostel.
When passing the borough boundary on the way to Sippenaken – where the splendid castle of Beusdaal may be admired – a curious monument is passed. It was raised in the memory of the victims of the electrical wire which separated Belgium and the Netherlands in World War I (the Great War)

NAC (New Administration Center)

In Houthalen-Helchteren the past goes hand in hand with the future. As symbols of two major periods, they stand out over our community: the pit heads and the New Administrative Centre (NAC), which has even made it onto the list of ‘100 places in the world that you just have to see’.

This futuristic and at the same time sober, ecological and extremely functional building is located on the old mining site and houses among others the municipal services, the OCMW (Social Service Department), the library, VVV-Toerisme and the police. The observation point on the roof of the building's blue tower, an artistic spot with an extensive view over this community and the region, is called ‘het Oog van Daubechies’ ('the eye of Daubechies').

This tower is named after a resident of Houthalen-Helchteren: Ingrid Daubechies. In the stairway enclosure you will find more information on her brilliant and famed mathematical formulas.
