"De Wijers is a real cultural landscape. By this we mean that throughout history, man has played a major role in shaping the landscape. There are indications that fish were farmed there from the early Middle Ages. Several brooks and streams carry the water from the higher Kempen plateau to the Demer, making the region ideal for the construction fish ponds.
The Zonhoven fish farms are proof of this. If you want to obtain an insight into the origins of the Zonhoven fish farms and how they operate, a visit is indispensable.

A 1.5 hour guided tour around the freshwater fish farm guarantees a dazzling introduction to the life in the water. The origin of fish farming, the construction of ponds, water purification, breeding and growing ponds, feeding fish and transport are just a few of the topics the guide touches upon. So be sure to take a look behind the scenes at one of the leading fish farms in the area, which exports its freshwater fish far and wide!

Every second Saturday of the month from April to October, except in July, you can join a guided tour at 2 p.m. In July, there is a guided tour every Thursday at 2 p.m.

Natuurgebied Alserbos - Alserbos

Nature area 'Alserbos'

This area comprises 65 ha and has an elevation difference from north to south of 160 m. to 240 m. above sea level. On the steep, western slope you can find an oak-birch forest with a variation of oak, lime, ash, bilberry and beech. The Alserbos is one of the rare places in the Voer-region where heather, gorse, pennyroyal and woody chamois feel particularly at home. Even the badger feels at home here and has an ideal living and foraging area. Part of the nature reserve has been opened up as a "play forest". Starting point: Bauwerd, 3792 Sint-Pieters-Voeren

Especially for the little ones, there is a play forest equipped with several large play equipment. Slides and climbing equipment guarantee hours of fun in a wooded environment.

In the sports forest you can use the fit-o-meter. You always walk in the greenery and on a surface of coconut shavings. A beautiful, relaxing route where you can hear the birds singing and if you are lucky; see the deer crossing.

You will find the play and sports forest when you climb the steps of the geological wall, right by the sports hall.

During a Tai Chi in Nature day, you explore the undisturbed Voeren nature and Gert turns it into a real experience for the senses: become aware of the sounds of the woods and streams, experience silence, taste what the landscape produces. And all this combined with calming relaxation exercises and Tai Chi.
The Tai Chi excercises will be made extra accessible during this day. As a participant, you do not need any Tai Chi experience. Breakfast, lunch and delicious après Chi will be provided for each participant.

During our tai chi in nature day we learn to stand like a bittern , this bird has a yellow-brown plumage with dark spots and stripes and a black crown, if we can perform the movements fluently we might spot one.

Come and enjoy "Look at Sint-Truiden and Haspengouw". With panorama boards and panoramic viewpoints, more information on the impressive landscape, heritage, local producers and tourist attractions is provided at the highest vantage points of the town and its surroundings.

Negenoord Nature Reserve

"Negenoord-Kerkeweerd nature reserve (Dilsen-Stokkem) was once a gravel extraction site. Today, it is one of the many nature reserves being created along both the Belgian and Dutch sides of the Grensmaas. At the same time, a large cross-border 'Meuse Valley River Park' spanning over 2,500 hectares is being created, gravel is being extracted and more space is being provided for the river. This limits the risk of flooding.

In harmony with nature
The Negenoord-Kerkeweerd nature reserve is managed all year round using Konik ponies and Galloway cattle. They create a mosaic structure with open spaces, flower-rich brushwood and bushes. Recently, the beaver was also introduced to help out. Because of their grazing pattern and the supply of lime-rich gravel and seeds from the south, you find flowers and plants in Negenoord-Kerkeweerd that you will hardly find anywhere else in Limburg (except in the areas of the Meuse).
This floral paradise in turn benefits a great many butterflies and bees, such as the rare Andrena hattorfiana bee and the Queen of Spain fritillary.

This unique hiking area recently acquired an observation tower.
The tower was built in the middle of the area, on a mound at the highest point. The loam tower occupies a spot in the centre of the hiking area and offers visitors a wonderful view of the Meuse Valley River Park. Only natural materials such as clay, sand and Meuse gravel were used, all in the right proportions.

Roving adventurers
Because Negenoord-Kerkeweerd is so vast, you can roam around the ‘struin’ zone (area where visitors are allowed to roam freely). There are no paths, but you can follow those made by the Konik ponies or Galloway cattle and pretend you are in the middle of nowhere.
To guarantee the large grazers and other wildlife in the area are not disturbed, we do ask that you do not take dogs into the ’struin’ zone. Dogs are welcome on the footpaths in other parts of the hiking area."

The gnome walks at manege Bosscherhof are fun for young and old alike! Is your son or daughter crazy about horses, but still too young to ride? Then the gnome walks are the solution!

Children aged 4 and over are accompanied by their parents on a horse or pony. First, you can take the horse or pony out of the stable and brush and saddle it together. After this, we will make a nice walk in the woods together! These walks depend on the weather.

The tour lasts 3.4 km; on the way you will be given various assignments.

Unfortunately this route is not suitable for wheelchairs or baby carriages.

"Voetgolf" or footgolf is a combination off soccer and golf! You play the game with a soccer ball, there are 15 holes on an area off not less than 2ha. You kick the ball from the kick-off mat to the hole in as less kicks as possible.

It is definitely an activity for the whole family, there are plenty "luck"-factors which makes that it is not sure that the best soccer player will win.

Corpus: picnic spot Kattevennen

Tucked away in Kattevennen just behind the Visitor Centre you’ll find a picnic spot with a difference. Named Corpus, it was designed by nature artist Will Beckers. Visitors sit cheek by jowl in a large mown circle, cocooned by a sculpture made of corten steel and tree branches. A unique experience!

Ronny likes to harness one of his Brabant draught horses for a trip in the surrounding area.

You can also go there for guided walks. Organised for 10 to 35 people for groups, family outings, teambuilding and much more.

Cycling and hiking through the National Park

The Hoge Kempen National Park and its surroundings are great for cycling and hiking: shady forests with occasional glimpses of heathland or along quiet towpaths. Moreover, many routes are completely car-free. The occasional incline is part of the deal, but you do get a nice view as a reward.

Thanks to the cycling route network, you can discover the Hoge Kempen National Park by bike. The handy junction system is very flexible; the blue signs are your guide along the way. Station As is located at junction 41 and is one of the most beautiful departure points for a visit to the Hoge Kempen National Park.

The hiking area of As has more than 15 hiking loops, 3 of which start at Station As gateway. In the beautiful oak and birch forests, mixed deciduous forests, heathlands, gallery forests and natural wilderness, you can enjoy unique fauna and flora for hours.

Voeren is one big monument park with more than 120 listed castles, churches, half-timbered houses, burial crosses, chapels, village pumps, etc. Two mapped out car routes of about 35 km take you along the most beautiful monuments of this region. In recent years, several experiments took place in Meulenberg with the motto "upcycling Meulenberg. Bringing art and color into the neighborhood
was central. This created a dynamic of involved
residents who are committed to their neighborhood and neglected areas
got a positive destination.
The many positive reactions made the neighborhood dream of an artistic eye-catcher for Meulenberg. The idea of creating a large steel artwork grew and placing it on a traffic circle on an important approach road to the neighborhood. It became a symbolic tree, the Sink or knot oak. It is seen as a life path to the future, where some people are still at the foot of the adventure and others are already fully climbing. In the future, new trainees will add more branches to the tree.

For rider and horse, the Orshof is heaven on earth. We have everything on offer for a fantastic horse experience.

Recognised starting point
Orshof is a recognised starting point for the Limburg equestrian and driving route network. It is located between junctions 10 and 52.

From here, you can take wonderful rides in a beautiful natural area. The equestrian route network guides you from one junction to the next via brown signs. You can trot for hours over sandy soils and country dunes, through heathlands and pine forests. The ford is a challenge for every rider and driver.

650 km of mostly unpaved bridle paths, together form a well-maintained bridle and men's route network. So here you can spend hours with your four-legged friend.

The "Limburg 2023-2024 horseriding map" is available at reception free of charge.

On one side you have a view of the town of Borgloon, on the other side you can see the church of Kuttekoven and the chimney of the Fruit Experience Centre de Stroopfabriek, while on the other side you can see the mine tracks in Genk.

Wherever you look, the views are breathtaking!

Cyclists and walkers who pass the residential care centre along the route network can also take a look before they get ready for a snack and drink in the cafeteria.

The viewpoint can be entered free of charge.
