For years the Voer-region has been known as the pre-eminent walking and cycling paradise. But of course you can also tour the region by car or motorcycle. You will find the play and sports forest when you climb the steps of the geological wall, right by the sports hall.

The hill is located between the hamlets of Genebos and Genendijk in the municipality of Ham. Despite its low height, the hill has some steep slopes. The hill has a base of iron sandstone. Kepkensberg is covered with forest and is accessible to hikers. The Ham hiking route network also traverses this area. In recent years, the municipality has regularly bought pieces of forest so that it can remain a protected piece of nature.

For years, children big and small have come to enjoy themselves there. Today, Kepkensberg is being put on the map more than ever with the addition of a brand new Multimove path. The signposted, adventure trail of just under 3 kilometres starts at the Scout classrooms in Bivakstraat. The hike starts immediately with a tough climb at the well-known little chapel. Along the way, you will discover challenging exercises for young and old. Moovie, the mascot of Multimove, challenges you to balance, throw aimed, jump ... but above all to move and have fun. Social workshop De Winning and the municipal services put their creativity to use. New playground equipment was purchased for a number of skills. There are also picnic and rest facilities along the way.

Five ferries ensure a smooth and usually free crossing. Cross the Maas and take a look at the other side, a little further you cross the border via another ferry.

The cycle route network is a bit different, but the routes connect seamlessly with those in Belgian Limburg.

On one side, you have a view of the town Borgloon; on the other side, you can see the church of Kuttekoven, the chimney of the Fruit Experience Centre de Stroopfabriek, and the mine tracks of Genk.

Wherever you look, the views are breathtaking!

Cyclists and walkers who pass the assisted-living centre along their route, can also take a look before going down to the cafeteria for some refreshments.

Entrance to the viewpoint is free of charge.

However, before the chest reveals its secrets, you need to find the secret code by solving the questions during a playful hike through Borgloon.

The hike is ± 4,5 km long and starts at Visit Borgloon. Please remember to finish before closing hours, or the chest will remain closed.

The Lotto BMX Track is the fastest growing track at Circuit Zolder. In 2015 the track was 60% renewed. Fresh and tight asphalt, but above all: an 8 meter high construction that nestled right next to the existing 5 meter high starting hill.

PURE ADRENALINE
The upgrade catapulted the Lotto BMX track to F1 level in one fell swoop: today it is one of the top 10 BMX tracks worldwide. From the new starting hill, the BMX professionals thunder downhill at top speed towards the first jump. Pure adrenaline: the distance between the two hilltops is no less than 12 meters!

A FULL-FLEDGED WORLD CLASS TRACK
The Lotto BMX Track is updated year after year by the men of Protracks, the promising official BMX track builder from the North of France. Thanks to the efforts of the entire team and all the volunteers of Circuit Zolder, the Lotto BMX Track will be a fully-fledged world class track after the 2015 UCI BMX World Championships!

De Watering natuurgebied - De Watering

Step inside De Watering, a source of biodiversity in Lommel. This was once a dry heath landscape, but thanks to a unique irrigation system, it transformed into a bird and plant paradise. You won't find more than half of the plants anywhere else in Belgium.

The Watering was constructed in the 19th century by the Belgian state to irrigate the poor sandy soils of the Campine region. The ingenious irrigation system provided fertile grassland, where hay was grown for livestock. The Watering is therefore a silent witness to the rich agricultural history of the Kempen region.

Voeren is one big monument park with more than 120 listed castles, churches, half-timbered houses, burial crosses, chapels, village pumps, etc. Two mapped out car routes of about 35 km take you along the most beautiful monuments of this region. The route is not signposted but there is a map with an information booklet. In it you will find explanations and photos of each monument.

The provincial domain Nieuwenhoven is the largest public forest in Haspengouw (160 ha) where a well-maintained fishpond is located. Here, young and old can come and fish from April to October between sunrise and sunset. The purchase of a fishing permit at the Nieuwenhoven visitor centre is compulsory.

Access to the pitches is possible by making a reservation in advance via the Playtomic-APP.
Reservations can be made between 09.00h and 22.00h.
Two different rates apply:

- Peak hours from Monday to Friday 17.00h - 22.00h, weekends 09.00h - 22.00h

These mapped out car and motorbike routes will show you to the soul of Haspengouw. Behind every bend lies a new surprise. We have worked out four signposted loops that take you past the highlights of the region. Choose your starting and finishing point, follow the blue and white signs and feast your eyes. There is no shortage of natural beauty and history. Cities such as Borgloon, Bilzen, Sint-Truiden and Tongeren have a wealth of historical buildings and stories. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a regional dish with regional beer or making a stop to shop.

Tai Chi Relaxation is a recognized product of De Wijers. Gert Clerckx as host takes you on an exploration through nature with a focus on relaxation, meditation and Tai Chi.

The Schulensmeer in Linkhout is located in the Wijers, " the land of 1001 ponds", the habitat of many rare plants and animals. During our tai chi in nature day we learn to stand like a bittern , this bird has a yellow-brown plumage with dark spots and stripes and a black crown, if we can perform the movements fluently we might spot one.

Anyone walking through this immense area will remember the image of sandy soil and pine forest-covered dunes, intersected by dirt roads. Gerheserheide has all the assets to keep not only hikers but also cyclists and horse riders busy for hours. The 7 km "Nightjar Trail" is an ideal way to explore the area.

Tjenneboom - Tjenneboom

The tree of Tjenne

The name "Tjenne" refers to a certain Johanna Michiels, who was accused of witchcraft and sentenced to death after a two-year trial in 1667.
Her sentence was pronounced at the foot of the giant tree at the crossroads of four municipalities: Helshoven, Gotem, Mettekoven and Voort. Johanna Machiels was burnt at the stake a few hundred metres away, at the highest point of the hill.

From the Tjenne tree, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of several villages in Heers, Sint-Truiden and Borgloon.

Visit Domein Pietersheim, one of the nine access points to the Hoge Kempen National Park. This national park is a continuous nature area at least 1,000 hectares in size with a focus on nature. Think that’s big? The Hoge Kempen National Park is 12 times as large, with 12,000 hectares of nature reserve. In other words, all your walking and cycling adventures start here.

It’s also only a stone’s throw from Maastricht, Aachen and Hasselt. A day at Domein Pietersheim guarantees an adventurous journey of discovery between the past and present. The Pietersheim walking area has eight signposted walking loops. Four of them start at the access point. The other loops are accessible from nearby entry points. In the spring of 2016, all of the walking routes in Pietersheim were fully upgraded and a number of beautiful new routes added.

This is one of the most beautiful and important natural areas of the Voer-region. The exceptional fauna and flora of this area consists of ancient standard orchards, forest edges, slopes and grafts. It is an important foraging area for the badger. The hawk, red kite, little owl and tawny owl also feel in their element here. Intensive grazing management should give the limestone flora full chances to bloom again, including the orchids.

"De Wijers is a real cultural landscape. By this we mean that throughout history, man has played a major role in shaping the landscape. There are indications that fish were farmed there from the early Middle Ages. Several brooks and streams carry the water from the higher Kempen plateau to the Demer, making the region ideal for the construction fish ponds.
The Zonhoven fish farms are proof of this. If you want to obtain an insight into the origins of the Zonhoven fish farms and how they operate, a visit is indispensable.

A 1.5 hour guided tour around the freshwater fish farm guarantees a dazzling introduction to the life in the water. The origin of fish farming, the construction of ponds, water purification, breeding and growing ponds, feeding fish and transport are just a few of the topics the guide touches upon. So be sure to take a look behind the scenes at one of the leading fish farms in the area, which exports its freshwater fish far and wide!

Every second Saturday of the month from April to October, except in July, you can join a guided tour at 2 p.m. In July, there is a guided tour every Thursday at 2 p.m.

Cycling and hiking through the National Park

The Hoge Kempen National Park and its surroundings are great for cycling and hiking: shady forests with occasional glimpses of heathland or along quiet towpaths. Moreover, many routes are completely car-free. The occasional incline is part of the deal, but you do get a nice view as a reward.

Thanks to the cycling route network, you can discover the Hoge Kempen National Park by bike. The handy junction system is very flexible; the blue signs are your guide along the way. Station As is located at junction 41 and is one of the most beautiful departure points for a visit to the Hoge Kempen National Park.

The hiking area of As has more than 15 hiking loops, 3 of which start at Station As gateway. In the beautiful oak and birch forests, mixed deciduous forests, heathlands, gallery forests and natural wilderness, you can enjoy unique fauna and flora for hours.
