The Sint-Huibrechts-Lille mill - a smock mill - is a landmark on the landscape and a historical and archaeological site. It was declared a protected monument on 28 January 1980. It is a stone mill built on a mound in 1908, using material from the demolished Oude Molen (Old Mill). The mill can be visited free of charge on the 'open windmill days' from 2 - 5 p.m.
If you want to visit the mill you should arrive by 4 p.m. at the latest, as a guided tour with grinding demonstration takes about an hour.
If you want to visit the mill on a different date, you can do so by appointment. The characteristic mill serves as the hub of all kinds of activities.

It is also a 100-hectare oasis of peace in a stunning nature reserve. Around the Abbey buildings, footpaths lead you to De Wijers with its 1,001 ponds.
In the Herb and Inspiration Garden, you become one with nature.

Herkenrode Abbey Site is also a place of contemplation. Visit Hans Op de Beeck's artwork 'The Quiet View' and let your gaze wander across a never-ending landscape.

By car
On the E313 (Antwerp-Liège) take exit 27 (Hasselt-West). Follow the N2 direction Herk-De-Stad. Just after Decathlon, turn right. From there, follow the signs to the Abbey Site’s free car park.

By public transport
Take the train to Hasselt station. At the station square take bus 51 Heusden to the stop 'Herkenrode Brug'.

Under the leadership of engineer Weiss and contractor Morglia, the Bocholten people jacked their church tower 2 cm from its foundations in 1910 and moved it 9.4 metres. A feat that has earned the Bocholten people the proud nickname of "tower crusaders".
All your questions about this will be answered during a visit to the Tower Replacement Museum. Photographs, plans and objects give you a clear view of the tower relocation of 1910.

The Mottetoren was built in the 12th century in the centre of Kessenich. It was built on an artificial hill and served as a defence tower for the seigniory. After three excavations, the foundations of the tower and the later added constructions were uncovered and preserved. At the end of the 19th century, Baron Michiels van Kessenich had a burial chapel built for his family on the same hill.
The ‘hill’ is freely accessible to the public.

On October 16, 1922, Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth paid a visit to the Eisdense Tuinwijk. The descent of the queen into the mine made such an impression on the population at the time that a park was built with the statue of the queen. The statue is made of white Carrara marble. There is also a kiosk in the Queen's Park where numerous events take place.

'De Putmannen' is the name of the monument that stands on the church square as a tribute to the 251 miners who died in the mine of Eisden, during (or as a result of) their work. It is a design by the Eisden artist Pollie Gregoor. He designed a hollow, rectangular column on a low plinth, with two open walls, which 'create' a passage, gate or lift cage with a glass floor above a deep 'well'. Which refers to the mine; the surface.

Remersdaal is located in the east of the Voer-region. Here the landscape already shows plenty of characteristics of the Land of Herve: farms scattered in the meadows. Next to the church, you will notice the remains and the farmstead of the former castle 'Het Hoes'. A much better preserved castle is located a few kilometers outside the village center. The castle 'Obsinnich' dates from the 17th century and is now a vacation home for youth groups. On the municipal boundary with Sippenaeken there is a remarkable monument. It was erected in honor of the victims of the electric wire that separated Belgium and the Netherlands in World War I. And while you're in the area, you should also take a look at Sippenaeken itself, home to the impressive Beusdaal castle. More information about Remersdaal's church can be found in the book 'De Sint-Heribertuskerk van Remersdaal in haar rijke, historische kader'. The 2006 edition has 47 pages.

The city hall of Bree is a former Augustinian monastery (1659) that has been fully renovated and restored. It has become a gem of modern techniques combined with respect for the historical character of the building. Besides the city hall, there is a baroque chapel (1717).

As an individual visitor, you can walk around during the city hall's opening hours.

's-Gravenvoeren is a ribboned village along the Voer River. The houses have their own footbridge. The church, presbytery and several farms date from the Austrian period. Most of the grave crosses against the exterior wall of the church are 18th century. A beautiful spot is the square Kinkenberg. In the hamlet of Schophem is the Steenbos Chapel. The chapel was built with excavated materials. There are two castles: Altenbroek and Ottegraven.

The railway viaduct dominates the villagescape of Sint-Martens-Voeren. The viaduct spans the Voer Valley and is part of the railway connection Antwerp-Tongres-Aachen. The railway line was built in the First World War. Two kilometres further on, at the hamlet of Veurs, the railway line enters a tunnel that, at 2130 metres, is the longest in Belgium. Since 1958, only goods trains have used the line. In Remersdaal, the railway viaduct also occupies an important place in the landscape.

The Wire of Death

The Wire of Death. This is how the high voltage frontier barrier was known, a weapon used by the Germans in World War I, installed along the entire border between the Netherlands and Belgium in Beverbeekse Heide nature reserve. The fence has not been forgotten even after more than 100 years. In Hamont-Achel, special signs lead to a reconstruction of this terrifying fence, which for 180 km, from Vaals to Cadzand, carried a voltage of 2,000 volts or more.
The reconstruction at pole number 174 and cycling node 216 on the original border line accurately shows what the fence looked like over a distance of 200 metres. ‘Den Draad' (The Wire), as the phenomenon is still called in the local dialect, took a heavy toll on the lives of residents living on the border and the monastic community of the Achelse Kluis was not spared either, as it is located on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium and was literally split in two by the barrier. If you examine the wall at the main entrance to the abbey, you can still spot traces of it in the brickwork.

The restored Kruisheren church was built in 1767 and is the only church in Limburg to have a Rococo interior.
Tours led by official guides every Sunday between 15.00 and 17.30 May to September.

The church was built by the order of the mine company and was designed by architect Auguste Van nieuwenborg from Uccle. It is dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of the miners. the Church was built in neo-Gothic style as a building filled with brick walls of reinforced skeleton . The Church is 56 metres long and has a 53 metre high tower. The red and blue in the beautiful stained glass windows was initiated on the red and blue in the glass windows of the Cathedral of Chartres.

The statue of Ambiorix

Tongerens’ most famous (or should that be notorious?) inhabitant also occupies the most prominent place in the city. The imposing bronze statue of Ambiorix, King of the Eburones, dating from 1866 is a tribute to his memorable victory over the Romans in 54 BCE. It prompted Julius Caesar to call the Belgians the bravest of all the Gauls. Ambiorix is posing in Germanic attire and a dragon helmet, his hatchet as his weapon of choice. His feet are trampling the weapons of the defeated Roman foe. The fence around the statue is made of spears, wild boar heads and arrows, entirely in line with Celtic tradition.

The Museum Church is located at the place-to-be: Groenplaats in Oud-Rekem. After a difficult and lengthy start, the church was finally reopened in 1774. In 1956, when it become clear that the church was not large enough to accommodate the increasing numbers of parishioners from Rekem and Wezet, the decision was made to build a larger church in Kleinveld. After having been the centre of Rekem's parochial life for two centuries, the old parish church was taken over by the municipal authorities that same year to be turned into a museum.

Under the motto ‘A church becomes a church again’, the interior was restored to its original grandeur. Following a thorough renovation in 2015, it can once again be admired in all its glory.

This Romanesque church is one of the first Christianization sites in Haspengouw. Saint Amand founded a church and monastic community here in 647. Inside you will discover the relics of the Wintershoven saints, a unique Celtic sacrificial altar and a roll-out pulpit.
In 2020, the church was restored, and the pulpit was put away. At the moment, all visitors can admire the moving pulpit again.

Im Haus is an experience house dedicated to living history. Numerous dioramas take you back to how life was in Belgium at the time of the Second World War. All this happens under the guidance of the guide who explains the depicted situations and brings some interesting stories back to life. In the many rooms, time-related items and numerous mannequins in appropriate Second World War costumes will be on display.

Agricultural Experiment and Training Centre

The PVL was founded in 1989, with practical research into fodder crops and the stable infrastructure for pigs and dairy cattle as its core tasks. Later, this was also extended to projects on agricultural nature management and small-scale water purification. PVL also manages an extensive range of after-school training: courses, practical lessons and study tours on cattle breeding, vegetable cultivation, fodder crops and farm management.

What is there to see?
- Dairy farm: cows are milked with a robot.
- Pig farm: this is the only farm that can be visited in a sanitary and safe manner, as the stables are equipped with a visitor's corridor
- Water purification street: here, various systems of KWZ (Small Scale Water Purification) are set up.
- Children's farm

Bocholter Brouwerij Museum is Europe’ largest brewery museum. It is located in the historical brewer’s house, right opposite the fermentations tanks of the Martens brewery.
Here the Martens family brewed beer from 1758 until mid 19th century.
Today it is a multifunctional museum of 4.000 m².

The Pollis Mill

The Pollismolen in Opitter has been fully operational again since 2016. The mill is located in a remarkably beautiful landscape along the Wijshager or Eetsevelderbeek stream. This beautiful undershot water mill with an authentic and monumental wooden interior was already mentioned in 1078. The current building and interior date back to around 1870. In addition, the mill has several special features such as a sharpening machine (patent 1888) for blue stone and a special old blue millstone with remarkable and beautifully carved decorations in the stone.

A group tour of the mill by the miller is also possible by appointment. In the tourist season, it is also open to individual visitors on certain Sundays.

This location is also the starting point of the Itterdal hiking area.

Thor Central is an impressive industrial building which was given listed status after the closure of the mines. The option of turning the site into a technology park came up when looking for a new and meaningful use for Waterschei colliery, one that would give this magnificent building a bright new future.
Thor Central is now the beating heart of the Thor Park site. The Food Plaza is worth a visit in its own right, with the Partaasch restaurant and Lampada brasserie open to the public every day. The building is also well equipped for corporate events with meeting rooms, an auditorium, central reception and even a crèche. Exhibitions and events are organized here on a regular basis.

The house for the mine director was built in 1912; She got the classic place, opposite the main entrance to the mine. When the ruin proved unsuitable for the excavation of the shafts, the place for the director's residence was preserved. The first director-manager who moved into this house was the Walloon mining engineer Adolphe Demeure. Restaurant de Mangerie and the company house are now located in this building. Behind the former director's residence is the forest park, a domain of five hectares consisting of trees and flowers.

Theelen House Discover the story of Limburg’s most famous newspaper!

Theelen House is located in a former canon house. These residences formed a separate neighbourhood in the city until the end of the 18th century and accommodated the canons who ran the chapter of the Basilica of Our Lady. Founder-publisher Nicolaas Theelen had his printing business here and published ‘Het Algemeen Belang der Provincie Limburg’, the precursor of the newspaper ‘Het Belang van Limburg’, between 1890 and 1918.
A small part of the original canon house has survived to this very day. We’ve called it ‘Theelen House’.
Theelen House contains a (small) museum about the history of ‘Het Belang van Limburg’ and the Theelen and Baert families. The museum is not accessible to individual visitors but the façade offers a good view of the inside.

The artwork of Wesley Meuris (BE) is an anchor point in the sloping landscape and invites visitors to step in.
The architectural structure of the work provides a special experience of looking and dwelling. The steel built space can be interpreted in many ways by the visitor and challenges the imagination.
Whoever is in the room, experiences the intimacy. This reflects the memory of its surroundings.

Welcome to the most beautiful square in the mine region. Formerly a prestigious district for staff at the mines, Kioskplein tops off your trip through the mine city. Its villas were home to engineers and executives. The typical architecture of the square and gardens has remained. This picturesque square is one of the many nostalgic highlights of the mine city.

The church tower is the oldest in the country. The lower, stone section dates back as far as the 10th century. On 11 May 1940, the church burned down completely and was only rebuilt 16 years later. Only the church tower survived the fire and thus still consists of the material used in the year 900: ironstone.

This small ground-sailer is a nice little mill. Together with the miller's house, which is as old as the mill, it forms an attractive whole.
The windmill is a ground-sailer with a 24-metre wingspan. The sails on the sails are stretched from the ground. There are two pairs of stones, or millstones: one used to grind grain for consumption, the other for buckwheat.

The Teutenkamer provides a general idea of the history and significance of the Teuten.

Teuten heritage is rare, yet after very intensive research, an exceptional patrimony has been brought together thanks to the cooperation of various Teuten families and heritage associations.

Many small but interesting pieces of heritage are exhibited in the Teutenkamer: portraits of Teutens (Agten from Eksel, Kenis from Overpelt, Rijcken from Hamont), photos of individual Teutens, as well as group photos, Teuten objects, including copper kettles in various sizes and weights, working materials, cash books bound in parchment and many loose documents, including the well-known Teuten contracts.

One spectacular piece is a porcelain pipe from the Teuten Peeten family in Eksel, depicting a Teutjager (Teuten hunter). The Teuten walking stick, with its built-in blade, the measuring rod, the castrating knife and the gold weighing scale also appeal to the imagination.

Other masterpieces include the Borkelse Teut Heuvels notebook, containing instructions on castrating cattle, the little prayer book written by the Teuten woman Joosten in Gouda, the mala fide booklet 'De Teuten' by Pieter Ecrevisse, written in 1844 and portraying the Teuten as ‘buckriders’, or the book of poems by the literarily gifted Teuten son Jan-Matthijs Ballings, published by the Maeseycker Weekblad.

The eye-catcher is the pop-up Teuten shop, including the original cash register-counter, used by the Hamont Teuten company Ballings-Joosten-Keunen in Harmelen (NL).

The Teuten heritage also consists of monumental Teuten houses; there are dozens of well-preserved examples in Hamont-Achel, Hechtel-Eksel and Sint-Huibrechts-Lille, some of which are listed buildings. There are six Teuten houses on the market square in Hamont.
