The Eggertingen nature reserve is located in the south of Kortessem and ends in Hoeselt and Borgloon. On foot you will discover the (bio)diversity of 3 streams and their valleys. Along the slopes you will get to know surprising views of old landscape elements such as beautiful wooded edges, standard orchards and flower-rich meadows.

In the Uilenbos there are, in addition to the wood anemone, the spotted arum, the celandine weed can also admire the ground elder and the wasp orchid.

You can explore the Eggertingen nature reserve via 2 routes, each between 5 and 10 km.

These terms probably don't say you a lot, it are unique experiences in Hechtel-Eksel. Play a combination off soccer and golf on a terrain off 2ha or do a tour by foot or by bike and put the golf ball a few times in a hole, or go for a hunt to solve a mystery, an escape-experience where you walk or cycle in the nature and village off Hechtel-Eksel.

After an activity there is a good chance that you are thirsty, you can come to us for that too. We have a range of soft drinks, beers, wine, ice cream and more. Of course you can also just come and have a drink with a view on the footgolf field.

Enjoy this lovely greenspot and castle on walking distance of the Market Place. The walking tour ‘Hidden beauties’ guides you through the Regional Landscape Haspengouw and Voeren. The beautiful rose garden is being maintained by the gardeners of ‘Tuinhier Volkstuinen’ and Wiric. Children can visit the new inhabitants (alpaca’s, goats, pigs, rabbits, mule’s, pony’s…) and enjoy themselves on the playground, surrounded by nature and threes. You can sit down and grab a bite or have a drink in Afspanning ‘t Speelhof.

The gateways are the ideal starting places from where you can explore the National Park and all it has to offer!

In the Mechelse Heide, nature speaks for itself: beautiful heathland as far as the eye can see! Or would you rather climb the mining-stone hills in Terhills, previously known as Connecterra, to enjoy a breath-taking panorama? Relive the noble past in the moated castle in Pietersheim or visit the children's farm with playground. In Kattevennen, you can sit back and let yourself be carried away by the 360° projections in the Cosmodrome, while a barefoot trip in Lieteberg will never leave you disappointed! If you’re bringing bikes, then Station As is your ideal starting point.

The National Park with its dark green forests, vast heathland and shimmering fens invites you to go out on a hike. You can choose from 82 signposted loops, which start at the gateways. They are easy to combine thanks to the hiking switches. Did you know that two walks in Pietersheim carry a Premium quality label?

We’re confident that cyclists and mountain bikers, too, will find what they are looking for here! Thanks to the network of cycling tracks, you can easily create your own route. Mountain bikers have the choice of 10 signposted loops, ranging from 16 to 80 km, all varying in difficulty.

We even have a whole network of trails for horse riders. With clear signs and clear maps, you will never lose your way!

Would you like to strike out with a local? Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, a Ranger sets off from one of the gateways. Groups can also book their own Rangers online.

Get to know the Vinkenbier route. This 10 km walking route will teach you more about the origins and history of the Vinkenbier. The route takes you past beautiful spots in Geistingen, Ophoven and Kessenich, some of which were important for the creation of the Vinkenbier.

The route is signposted, but is also made clear via directions on the walking map.
Taking this route with an E-car is definitely recommended!

Discover the unique silence and vastness of this heathland. Definitely recommended in August-September, when the heather turns purple. While walking through the loose sand you will come across a glittering fen here and there. Even in prehistoric times, hunters came here to polish their axes at the 'Holsteen'. A unique hike.

Koersels Kapelleke is the ideal trip for families with small children. You will find walking routes of 2.6 km, 3.5 km, 6.8 km and 7.1 km.
You walk through woods and along heathland. There are several catering establishments and there is a large playground. Make sure you visit the visitor center 'De Watersnip' for more information about the local fauna and flora.

Standing on the highest look-outs, information is given about the impressive landscape, heritage, local manufacturers and tourist attractions. Panorama signs and spectacles are used.

- Abbey tower
The viewpoint on the abbey tower, which is the beacon of the city, is the only viewpoint that is located in the center. From here you get a beautiful view of the city and the haspengouw nature that embraces the city. At bike junction 135.
- Viersprong Nieuwenhoven
On the Viersprong, located between Engelbamp and Heide, there is a lookout point that overlooks the southern Sint-Truiden, whose skyline is clearly recognizable on clear days. At bike junction 150.
- Honsberg Zepperen
From the higher Honsberg or Hongarenberg (Hungarians settled here) you can view the village with binoculars: with the Sint-Genovava church, the meadows of d’Oye and on the horizon the tower of the basilica of Kortenbos. A breathtaking view over the typical Haspengouw nature. Between bike junction 171 and 149.
- Panorama basin Romeinse Weg
On the Romeinse Weg in Velm, you will come across a water basin in the middle of the Haspengouw fields. Go up the stairs to the platform and discover a 360° panoramic view of the area. Between bike junction 185 and 186.
- Helsh(ea)ven
At the highest point in Helshoven, you can now enjoy a breathtaking view of the Haspengouw landscape. Artist Frits Jeuris designed a unique creation made of dozens of felled fruit trees from the area. The latest platform offers a little more. It is embedded in “Helsh(ea)ven”, a work of art made of 90 cherry trees of fifty years old. At the end of 2016, they fell prey to the Little Cherry Virus, an infectious plant disease that causes too small fruit in cherries. Now the felled trees get a second life. The work symbolizes the dynamic landscape of Haspengouw. At bike junction 169.

The hiking box collects 11 beautiful hiking areas in Bosland. The routes take you from one hiking area to another. In den Brand and Pijnven in Hechtel-Eksel; Resterheide and Hoksent-Molhem in Peer/Hechtel-Eksel. Heesakkerheide, Holven - 't Plat and Grote Hof and Hobos in Overpelt; Heuvelse Heide, Kattenbos, the Sahara and the Blauwe Kei-De Maat in Lommel. Whichever area you choose, nature will spoil you to the fullest.

The 30-hectare Thor Park is part of the magnificent Hoge Kempen National Park. You can explore the park either on foot, or by bike using the Limburg bicycle network. The Schansbroek (stream), the Klaverberg (inland dunes) and the Kolenspoor (coal railway) are all nearby. The remarkable landscape is a combination of rare flora and fauna, magnificent industrial mine buildings and the garden suburbs. Hence the application for their classification as UNESCO world heritage.
Thor Park’s old Waterschei spoil heap, made up of waste rock adjacent to the coal seams removed during coal mining, is a nod to Genk’s rich mining history. In 1999 the spoil tip was given listed status, but you can still climb it. Just follow the little stone men to the top. You can contribute your own little stone man. At the top of the tip, you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the impressive colliery and the KRC Genk football stadium.
To make the Thor Park area accessible to the public, eleven new walks ranging from 2 to 16 km have been mapped out. They are outlined in the handy THOR PARK map of walks, a total of more than 40 km of signposted footpaths. Information about the area is also provided. The map is available from F&B outlets at Thor Central, the main building on the site next to the C-mine Visitor Centre, or online via the National Park webshop.

Greeters, volunteer guides

A HasseltGreeter is a local volunteer, passionate about where they live, who wants to share this passion with others (max. 6 people) via an off-the-beaten-track guided walk or bike-tour.

A visit to Hasselt with a Greeter will focus on the tourist’s experience. You’ll get to listen to personal anecdotes and top tips as your Greeter takes you on a tour through his or her city as though you were a relative or a friend. Tours will mainly be given on foot, but some Greeters will do bike tours as well. Please tell your Greeter your preference and he or she will provide you with a 2-3 hours visit. You can be sure of an original, authentic and completely free visit that will stay with you for a long time!

Twijfelgrens - Fred Eerdekens

In Borgloon, Fred Eerdekens (BE) shows a folded line in the landscape.
You will find a wooden-like sculpture where you - only when looking from the right angle - can read the word 'twijfelgrens' (doubt border). Fred Eerdekens often uses language as a medium for his artworks. At the same time, his work is a reflection on how language works. For Twijfelgrens you have to assume the right position to be able to read the "concealed" word and to gain insight.

Wandeling Vliermaalroot - wandeling

Hiking in rural Vliermaalroot

In the signposted Vliermaalroot hiking area you can choose from three routes that can be combined with each other, varying in distance between 5 and 15 km.
You can start at the information panel at the church of Vliermaalroot. You can also leave your car there.

The walking area is mainly located in and around the valley of the Mombeek and runs along castles, forests, grasslands and poplars.

This walk guides you to the most interesting places and monuments of the little town on the Demer. Follow the raised copper markers in the pavement engraved with the B of Bilzen and walk along lovely green spaces and fascinating historic sites.

De Pollismolen - Molenaar

The Pollis Mill

The Pollis mill in Opitter has been fully operational again since 2016. The mill is located in an exceptionally beautiful landscape on the Wijshager or Eetsevelderbeek. The earliest mention of this splendid water mill with an authentic and monumental wooden internal mechanism was in 1078. The current building and internal mechanism dates back to about 1870. In addition, the mill has a few special attributes, such as a cutting machine (patent 1888) for blue stone and a special old blue millstone with remarkable and beautiful decorations cut into the stone.

A guided group tour of the mill by the miller is also possible by appointment. During the tourist season, it is open on certain Sundays to individual visitors.

This location is also the starting point of the Itterdal hiking area.

Stimulus Path

Stimulus Path

Experience nature along the route that was created for children and young people with a disability. The Stimulus Path starts at the Flemish Visitors Centre ‘De Watersnip’. Along the walking route you will pass 12 "experience elements". They include touch boxes, a sound labyrinth, a wiglo, a visual wall, touching stones, etc. Visitors are stimulated with scents, sounds (or silence), colours, structures, movements, etc. The five senses play a central role in the development of children.

The Stimulus Path is fun for everyone, especially for families with young children. Part of the path runs through the playground at the Koersels Kapelleke.

You can borrow a guide book from the visitors centre during the opening hours of 'De Watersnip'. You can also explore the Stimulus Path with a nature guide. The path is about 2.5 km long and can easily be done with an all-terrain buggy.

Wandelen in Kattevennen - wandelen Kattevennen

Hiking Kattenvennen

Signposted routes take you to quiet places of enjoyment in the pine forest of Kattevennen. From the parking lot of the domain you can start your hike to the Marien cave of Wiemesmeer or to the Heempark.
The green route is 4.6, the blue 7.2 and the red 9.6 km. A new yellow loop of 11.5 km connects Kattevennen with the Hei- en meibos of Sledderlo and the surfing lake Papendaalheide.

The Kattevennen walking map is available in the visitors' centre (€ 2).

Nature area 'van Veurs'

This is one of the most beautiful and important natural areas of the Voer-region. The exceptional fauna and flora of this area consists of ancient standard orchards, forest edges, slopes and grafts. It is an important foraging area for the badger. The hawk, red kite, little owl and tawny owl also feel in their element here. Intensive grazing management should give the limestone flora full chances to bloom again, including the orchids.
