Discover the Flemish masters in their place in Tongeren
Gasthuiskapel
This chapel from 1660 belonged to St James' Guesthouse, a stopping place for pilgrims. Here you will find the statue of Saint Agnes, a female figure in 3D inspired by the work of Jan van Eyck, as well as the Baroque funerary monument (1697) designed by Liège artist Jean Delcour for Maria de Berchem, countess de Hinnisdael, and her husband Frans van Hinnisdael, lord of Betho.
Teseum
Here you can admire an ensemble of fourteen reliquaries from the 15th and 16th centuries, a choir cap buckle, the silver processional cross, the reliquary with the veil of Our Lady and the reliquary busts of Saint Pinosa (Hendrik van Tongeren, c. 1400) and Saint Olivia.
Beguinage museum Beghina
On the idyllic little square Onder de Linde, an authentic house from 1660 houses the Beguinage Museum Beghina. Slowly hurry to this UNESCO World Heritage Site and admire the centuries-old St Catherine shrine, specially made for the Tongres Beguinage.
Basilica of Our Lady
In Our Lady's Basilica, you will find the statue of Mary Cause of Our Joy, made of walnut. The statue's coronation in 1890 marked the start of the Coronation celebrations. These take place every seven years and are part of an important tradition for the people of Tongres, who participate in them en masse. Discover the processions and richly decorated streets with us in 2030!
St Stephen's Church in Heerlen
In this church, visit the reliquary of several saints. Admire the chest of effigies in the choir of the church. Perhaps a remnant of that divine power still lurks in it.
St. Martin's church
Berg's first church is said to have been built on the foundations of a pagan temple and was dedicated to St Martin, the son of a Roman tribune. Originally Romanesque, the church took on a Gothic character over the following centuries. Accordingly, the south aisle houses a late Gothic statue of Saint Martin, from the 17th century, and a unique 15th-century ‘trabes’ or ‘apostle beam,’ a Romanesque element.
