None of the Gateways to the National Park are so adapted to hiking as the ‘Mechelse Heide’. The north side of the road between ‘As’ and ‘Maasmechelen’ (‘J. Smeetslaan’) will take you through a nice forest area, while the south side mainly consists of heather and will take you to some of the highest points of the ‘Hoge Kempen’. You can even see as far as Germany. Due to the difference in height, some of the routes are considered moderate to heavy walking. But it is well worth the effort, since these hikes will take you to some of the most beautiful patches of heather in the region (‘Mechelse Heide’ or ‘Kikbeekbron’). All the hiking routes fall within the boundaries of the National Park

With the exception of the ‘Vierlandsherenpunt’, all hiking routes starting at the ‘Lieteberg’ fall outside the National Park. This does not mean they are not very charming natural areas on themselves. They are situated on the soft slanting southern hillside of the ‘Hoge Kempen’. Most heather has given way to pine forests, but you can still find some very nice relics of heather at the ‘Bezoensberg’. And the ‘Hesselberg’ contains the second biggest plantation of juniper. More to the south, the regions ‘Hoefaert’, ‘Roelen’ and ‘Gellik’ have a lot to offer. In ‘Hoefaert’ and ‘Roelen’ you will find some very diversified woodlands, whilst ‘Gellik’ is situated near the border with ‘Haspengouw’, which explains the amount of orchards around the villages.

The hiking routes starting at ‘Kattevennen’ are the ideal connection between the centre of Genk and the National Park. The vast pine forests are an excellent environment for an intensive walk. Due to the presence of the Botanical Park, the sundials of the ‘Molenvijver’ park and the Path of the Planets, it is also an educational trip.

Examples of possible trips are: following a “wooden plank path”, hiking to the ‘ecoveloduct’ (an ecoduct for both fauna and cyclists), and many more.

Little stone men

On the path to the right of Thor Central, 12 little stone men or small piles of basalt mark the shortest route to the top of the spoil pit. The principle is simple: you walk from one heap of stones to the next. Everyone will come across them at some point, suddenly and unexpectedly. And you are duty-bound to add your own little stone man!

Hiking in the Voer region

The Voer region is one of Flanders' top hiking destinations. You explore the beautiful scenery by following the junctions of the marked hiking network. About 124 km of pure hiking fun. With its more than 90 numbered intersections (crossroads of walking paths), the hiker can plan the itinerary and length in advance. But you can also follow one of the themed walks leading through forests, past rivers, sunken roads, stately farmhouses and castles, distinctive half-timbered houses, and beautiful views.
