This cycling route has been specially designed for Heritage Day on September 8, 2024, and will be especially immersive on that day! Herita, the municipality of Wellen, RLHV, and PCCE are organizing this activity.

This fall, one of the most challenging restoration projects in Flanders will begin at Heers Castle. During Open Monument Day, involved architects, volunteers, researchers, and students will explain their roles in this megaproject. This will give you a unique behind-the-scenes look.

You will cycle to Sint-Truiden – the home of abbots and beguines for centuries – to visit the Beguinage Church. The walls of this 800-year-old Romanesque-Gothic church are decorated with 38 monumental seccos, and the organ is the oldest playable organ in the country. The beguinage is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Guides will tell the stories of the church and the beguinage, and who knows, the organ might also play.

Further on in Wellen, the focus this year is entirely on the Buckriders. 250 years ago, 31 people from Wellen were executed on suspicion of being Buckriders. In the Bonderkuil in Wellen, descendants tell you the true story of the Buckriders of Wellen. In the chapel of Oetersloven, you can visit an exhibition on Buckriders and witchcraft.
