Mark Dion honours Herbricht with new work for Art on the Meuse
The first international artist for the Art on the Meuse (Kunst aan de Maas) project has been announced. American artist Mark Dion has createed a tree of life for the municipality of Lanaken, with animals and objects of relevance to the surrounding area. The target date for completion is 30 June 2022 at the earliest. Also on display is the very first work by Benjamin Verdonck, which can be admired at the Boyen chapel in Dilsen-Stokkem.

Conceptual artist Mark Dion (New Bedford, Massachusetts, 1961) is bringing years of experience with him to the Meuse Valley. He gained international acclaim for his examination of ecological issues and the perception of nature.

Dion’s work was a deliberate choice by the artistic committee. It aligns with the heart of the project and complements the river landscape in and around Herbricht, which is defined by the Meuse Valley and the Meuse river. During last year’s floods, the area was literally transformed into a refuge for animals. This makes Dion’s Tree of Life even more symbolic.

Dion accepted the invitation and sketched an impressive eight-metre-tall sculpture; a tree of life for animals, insects and objects from the surrounding area. The tree is rich in symbolism yet can be freely interpreted by viewers. It can be seen as an evolutionary family tree, a mythological tree of life that connects heaven, earth and the underworld, or something else entirely. When deciding which animals and insects to include, Dion researched the species that once lived in the Meuse Valley, from ancient sturgeon and the famous Mosasaurus to species that still live here today, like the beaver and the iconic Konik horse. They are all of natural and symbolic value to the area and some even feature in local folklore. Viewers are free to interpret the relationship between these animals.

The Gnome Trail at Domein Pietersheim has been one of the most popular attractions for years. Along the 3 km trail, children are invited to take part in various games, with colourful information along the route providing the details. The kids get to hug the big tree, crawl through a natural tunnel, make music with real gnome instruments or simply dream away in the park.

The Gnome Trail underwent a transformation in the spring of 2020. We welcomed new gnomes to the woods, new squirrels that show you the way and more little houses to discover. As the icing on the cake, there is a large gnome house at the children’s farm. The Gnome Trail can be started at the information signs at the children’s farm or at the moated castle bridge. Both follow the same route (indicated on posts). No map is needed. Distance: 40,000 gnome steps.

Visit Domein Pietersheim, one of the nine access points to the Hoge Kempen National Park. This national park is a continuous nature area at least 1,000 hectares in size with a focus on nature. Think that’s big? The Hoge Kempen National Park is 12 times as large, with 12,000 hectares of nature reserve. In other words, all your walking and cycling adventures start here.

It’s also only a stone’s throw from Maastricht, Aachen and Hasselt. A day at Domein Pietersheim guarantees an adventurous journey of discovery between the past and present. The Pietersheim walking area has eight signposted walking loops. Four of them start at the access point. The other loops are accessible from nearby entry points. In the spring of 2016, all of the walking routes in Pietersheim were fully upgraded and a number of beautiful new routes added.

's-Gravenvoeren is a ribboned village along the Voer River. The houses have their own footbridge. The church, presbytery and several farms date from the Austrian period. Most of the grave crosses against the exterior wall of the church are 18th century. A beautiful spot is the square Kinkenberg. In the hamlet of Schophem is the Steenbos Chapel. The chapel was built with excavated materials. There are two castles: Altenbroek and Ottegraven.

The ‘Archaeologist for a Day’ treasure hunt takes you on a trip to the archaeological park De Rieten, where burial mounds and unusual objects from the Iron Age have been found. Search for treasures from the past, crack codes, solve riddles, and discover if you are a Celt or a Roman. This kid-friendly treasure hunt with fun tasks for children aged 9 and up includes a brochure, a floor plan, a measuring tape, a magnifying glass, and a pencil. Scan QR codes located along the route and carry out playful tasks. You’ll even get tips and tricks to do some archaeological work at home afterwards.
